My Notes
What Does John 10:23 Mean?
"Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch." A simple geographical detail that carries layers of significance. Solomon's porch — also called Solomon's colonnade — was a covered walkway along the eastern wall of the Temple Mount. It was a public teaching area where rabbis and philosophers gathered.
The fact that Jesus walked there is both ordinary (many teachers did) and extraordinary (Solomon's greater is here — Matthew 12:42). The porch that bore Solomon's name now hosts the Son of David who exceeds Solomon in wisdom, authority, and purpose.
Solomon's porch will later become the gathering place of the early church (Acts 3:11, 5:12). The space where Jesus walked becomes the space where His followers gather after Pentecost. The physical location carries continuity from Jesus' ministry into the church's birth.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What spaces prepared by others are you now walking in?
- 2.How does Jesus walking in Solomon's porch connect the old covenant to the new?
- 3.What does the continuity from Jesus' ministry to the early church teach about how God uses physical spaces?
- 4.What 'Solomon's porch' in your life was built by a predecessor and is now your platform?
Devotional
Jesus walks in the Temple, in Solomon's porch. A detail so simple it seems throwaway. But the porch named for Solomon now hosts someone greater than Solomon. The wisest king's memorial space is being walked by the King of kings.
Solomon built the original Temple. His son lost the kingdom. Centuries of exile followed. And now, in the rebuilt Temple, in the porch that bears the builder's name, the One whom the Temple was always pointing toward walks casually among the columns.
The early church will gather in this same porch after Pentecost. Peter will preach here. The apostles will teach here. The space where Jesus walked becomes the space where His followers continue His work. The footprints lead from Jesus' ministry directly into the church's birth. Same porch. Same mission. Different feet.
There's something beautiful about Jesus walking in a space named for someone else. He doesn't need the porch renamed. He doesn't demand a plaque. He walks in Solomon's space because Solomon's space was always preparation for His arrival. The porch that bore the builder's name was built for the Builder.
What spaces are you walking in that were prepared by someone who came before you? What porches bear someone else's name but were always intended for what God is doing through you now?
