John 10:26

John 10:26
But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you.

My Notes

What Does John 10:26 Mean?

Jesus tells the Jewish leaders directly: you don't believe because you're not my sheep. The order is important — He doesn't say "you're not my sheep because you don't believe." He says "you don't believe because you're not my sheep." The belonging precedes the believing. The identity determines the response.

This is one of the clearest statements of divine election in Jesus' teaching. The capacity to believe is connected to being part of Jesus' flock — a belonging that is assigned, not earned. The sheep believe because they're sheep. The non-sheep don't believe because they're not.

"As I said unto you" references earlier teaching (verses 3-4): my sheep hear my voice. These leaders hear the same words and don't believe. Not because the words are unclear. Because they're not hearing the shepherd's voice — they lack the capacity that belonging provides.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Does the idea that belief follows belonging (not the other way around) comfort you or trouble you?
  • 2.If your faith is evidence of being 'His sheep,' how does that change your confidence about your salvation?
  • 3.How do you respond to someone who hears the gospel and can't seem to believe — what does this verse suggest?
  • 4.Is your wrestling with faith a sign of distance from Jesus, or might it be the sound of His voice breaking through?

Devotional

"Ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep." Not the other way around. Not: you're not my sheep because you won't believe. You can't believe because you're not mine.

This is one of the hardest things Jesus says — and one of the most important. Belief isn't purely a human decision. It's connected to identity. To belonging. To something that was determined before you ever heard the voice.

The Jewish leaders had every advantage: Scripture, tradition, the temple, centuries of prophecy. They had more information about the Messiah than anyone alive. And they couldn't believe. Not wouldn't — couldn't. Because belief requires being a sheep. And they weren't.

This raises questions about election and free will that Christians have debated for millennia. But what's clear in the text is this: belonging to Jesus isn't earned by believing. It's the other way around. You believe because you belong. You hear the voice because you're a sheep. The identity produces the response.

If you do believe — if something in you responds to Jesus' voice, if you find yourself drawn to Him despite every reason not to be — that's evidence. Not of your good decision-making. Of your belonging. You're hearing the voice because you're His sheep. The belief you experience is proof that you were claimed before you ever chose.

And if you're wrestling — if you want to believe but can't quite — maybe the wrestling itself is the sheep responding. Maybe the struggle is the sound of the shepherd's voice working its way into ears that are slowly opening.
