My Notes
What Does John 16:28 Mean?
Jesus summarizes His entire existence in four movements. Came from the Father. Entered the world. Left the world. Returned to the Father. The biography of God incarnate in a single verse.
"I came forth from the Father" — the origin. Jesus didn't begin in Bethlehem. He came forth from the Father — emerged from the being of God, proceeded from the eternal relationship of the Trinity. The incarnation had a departure point, and that departure point was the Father Himself. Before the manger, before the womb, before the star — the Father.
"And am come into the world" — the arrival. The coming forth became a coming into. The eternal Son entered the temporal world. The one who existed outside of time submitted to its constraints. The one who occupied no space took up residence in a specific body, in a specific place, at a specific moment in history.
"Again, I leave the world" — the departure. The cross and ascension are compressed into three words. Jesus is going. The earthly phase of the mission is ending. The body that walked Galilean roads will be crucified, raised, and taken up. The world that received Him briefly will lose His physical presence.
"And go to the Father" — the return. The circle closes. From the Father, into the world, out of the world, back to the Father. The journey has a completion. The one who came forth returns to where He came from — but not unchanged. He returns as the God-man, carrying redeemed humanity with Him, having accomplished the mission the Father sent Him to complete.
The disciples finally understand. Verse 29-30 records their response: "Now speakest thou plainly... now are we sure that thou camest forth from God." The simplicity of the summary is what breaks through. No parable. No metaphor. Just the trajectory: from the Father, into the world, out of the world, to the Father. The clearest statement of the incarnation Jesus ever made.
Reflection Questions
- 1.How does the four-movement summary — from Father, into world, out of world, to Father — simplify your understanding of who Jesus is?
- 2.What does it mean for your daily life that Jesus has already completed the circuit — that the mission is finished and He's returned to the Father?
- 3.How do you live in the 'gap' between His departure and His return? What does faithful waiting look like?
- 4.Why did the disciples finally understand when Jesus spoke plainly? What does that tell you about how God communicates when you need clarity?
Devotional
Four movements. That's the shape of Jesus' life — and the shape of the gospel. He came from the Father (heaven is real, and the Son was there). He entered the world (the incarnation happened, God became flesh). He left the world (the cross and the ascension completed the mission). He went back to the Father (the work is done, the seat is taken).
The clarity here is a gift. After chapters of dense teaching, mysterious parables, and layered metaphors, Jesus lays it out in plain language. I came from there. I came here. I'm leaving here. I'm going back there. The disciples said: finally, You're speaking plainly. Sometimes the deepest truths need the simplest sentences.
The return is the part that matters most for you right now. Jesus went back to the Father. He's there. The mission He came to accomplish is complete. The sacrifice is offered. The resurrection has happened. The ascension has placed Him at the right hand of the Father. And from that position — from the completed circuit, from the returned-to-Father side of the story — He intercedes for you. He prepares a place for you. He governs everything for your benefit.
You live in the gap between His departure and His return — between "I leave the world" and the promised second coming. The circuit isn't fully closed yet. There's one more movement coming: He'll return to the world He left. But until then, the completed first circuit is your foundation. He came. He finished. He returned. Everything that happens to you now happens under the authority of someone who has already made the round trip.
