John 3:8

John 3:8
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

My Notes

What Does John 3:8 Mean?

"The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit." Jesus explains the new birth to Nicodemus through WIND: the wind blows where IT WANTS (not where you direct it). You HEAR the sound (the effects are detectable). But you CAN'T TELL where it comes from or where it goes (the origin and destination are invisible). And: SO IS everyone born of the Spirit. The Spirit-birth is like wind — detectable but uncontrollable, real but unexplainable, present but un-trackable.

The phrase "the wind bloweth where it listeth" (to pneuma hopou thelei pnei — the spirit/wind where it wills/wishes blows) exploits the DOUBLE MEANING of pneuma: the Greek word means both WIND and SPIRIT. Jesus uses the natural phenomenon (wind) to explain the spiritual one (Spirit). The wind/Spirit blows where IT wills — not where YOU will. The wind is sovereign. The Spirit is sovereign. The blowing isn't directed by the one who feels it. It's directed by its own will.

The "canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth" (ouk oidas pothen erchetai kai pou hypagei — you don't know from where it comes and to where it goes) makes the Spirit's movement UNTRACEABLE: you can feel the wind. You can hear it. You can see its EFFECTS (trees bending, leaves moving). But you can't see where it STARTED or where it's GOING. The origin and destination are invisible. The operation is detectable. The explanation is elusive.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Have you been born of the Spirit — and is the evidence detectable even if the explanation is elusive?
  • 2.What does the Spirit blowing 'where it wills' (not where you direct) teach about divine sovereignty?
  • 3.How does the wind analogy — detectable effects, invisible origin — describe the mystery of spiritual rebirth?
  • 4.What effects of the Spirit's work in your life are visible to others even though the mechanism is invisible?

Devotional

The wind blows where IT wants. You hear it. You can't see where it comes from or where it goes. And THAT is what everyone born of the Spirit is like. Detectable but uncontrollable. Real but unexplainable. Present but un-trackable. The Spirit-birth operates like wind — you feel it, you can't direct it.

The 'wind bloweth where it listeth' makes the Spirit SOVEREIGN: the wind doesn't ask permission. It doesn't follow your schedule. It blows where IT wills — its own direction, its own timing, its own force. The Spirit operates the same way. You don't control the Spirit's movement. You don't determine the Spirit's direction. You EXPERIENCE the Spirit's blowing. You don't DIRECT it.

The 'thou hearest the sound thereof' means the Spirit's work is DETECTABLE: you can't see the wind. But you can HEAR it — the sound, the rustling, the roaring. And you can see its EFFECTS — the trees bending, the water rippling, the dust swirling. The Spirit-birth produces EVIDENCE: changed lives, transformed hearts, new creation. The Spirit's work is REAL and VISIBLE in its effects even though the Spirit Himself is INVISIBLE in His operation.

The 'canst not tell whence it cometh and whither it goeth' makes the Spirit's movement MYSTERIOUS: you can feel it but you can't trace it. You can detect it but you can't predict it. The Spirit's origin is hidden. The Spirit's destination is unknown. The person born of the Spirit shares this quality — the new life is REAL (you can see it) but MYSTERIOUS (you can't explain it). The Spirit-born person is as real and as unexplainable as wind.

Have you been born of the Spirit — and is the evidence as detectable and the explanation as elusive as wind?
