John 7:15

John 7:15
And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

My Notes

What Does John 7:15 Mean?

"And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?" The Jewish leaders are ASTONISHED by Jesus' teaching — not by its content (which they oppose) but by His KNOWLEDGE: how does this man know Scripture WITHOUT FORMAL EDUCATION? The marvel is at the COMPETENCE of the untrained. The question implies: He didn't study with a recognized rabbi. He didn't attend the academies. He has no CREDENTIALS. How can He teach with this kind of knowledge?

The phrase "how knoweth this man letters" (pōs houtos grammata oiden — how does this one know writings/letters/Scripture?) expresses amazement at UNAUTHORIZED competence: the 'letters' (grammata) means both literacy and Scripture-knowledge. The question is: how does someone without formal rabbinic training KNOW the Scriptures at this level? The competence is undeniable. The credentials are absent. The gap between the knowledge and the training produces the marvel.

The "having never learned" (mē memathēkōs — not having studied/been a disciple) identifies the SPECIFIC deficiency: Jesus never studied UNDER a recognized teacher. He wasn't a disciple (mathētēs) of a known rabbi. He didn't go through the formal educational system. The 'never learned' means never enrolled, never apprenticed, never credentialed. The knowledge arrived without the system that's supposed to produce it.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What competence do you dismiss because it lacks credentials?
  • 2.What does Jesus knowing Scripture without formal training teach about the limits of credentialing systems?
  • 3.How does the knowledge coming from DIRECT access to the Author transcend educational systems?
  • 4.What 'unauthorized' competence in your life might come from a Source the system can't account for?

Devotional

How does He know the Scriptures without having STUDIED? The marvel is at unauthorized competence: Jesus teaches at the highest level without the credentials that supposedly produce that level. No rabbinic education. No formal apprenticeship. No diploma from the academy. And the teaching is UNDENIABLE. The gap between the knowledge and the training produces the astonishment.

The 'how knoweth this man letters' is the CREDENTIALING question: the religious leaders don't deny the QUALITY of Jesus' teaching. They question the SOURCE of it. HOW does He know? He didn't study with Gamaliel. He didn't train in Jerusalem. He's a CARPENTER'S son from NAZARETH. The knowledge is too good for the resume. The teaching exceeds what the background should produce.

The 'having never learned' reveals the system's ASSUMPTION: you can ONLY know Scripture properly through FORMAL EDUCATION. The rabbinic system assumed that knowledge came through apprenticeship — you studied under a master, who studied under a master, forming an unbroken chain of credentialed transmission. Jesus BREAKS the chain. His knowledge doesn't come from the system. It comes from DIRECT access to the Author.

The irony is complete: Jesus' knowledge doesn't come from formal education because Jesus is the SUBJECT of the education. The Scriptures they study are ABOUT HIM. The writings they've been taught are HIS story. The 'letters' they marvel at His knowing are the letters that describe HIM. The man without the credentials has the deepest possible connection to the text — He's the person the text is about.

What competence do you dismiss because it lacks credentials — and might the competence come from a Source the system can't account for?
