Joshua

Old Testament

Summary

After forty years of waiting, Joshua leads the Israelites across the Jordan River into Canaan. The dramatic crossing mirrors the Red Sea moment from Exodus — God is still showing up in unmistakable ways.

The most famous story here is the battle of Jericho, where city walls collapse after the Israelites march around them for seven days. It sounds strange, but it's meant to show that these victories aren't won by military strategy alone.

The land is then divided among the twelve tribes — detailed lists that felt meaningful to families whose inheritance was being recorded. Joshua closes with a powerful challenge: choose who you will serve.

What makes Joshua distinctive is its tension between promise and reality. The land is given, but not everything goes smoothly. Some battles are lost, some compromises are made. It's an honest picture of what stepping into something God has given you actually looks like.

Devotional

Right at the start, God tells Joshua the same thing three times: "Be strong and courageous." That kind of repetition isn't accidental. Joshua was probably scared.

He was following Moses — the most famous leader in Israel's history — and walking his people into territory where real battles would be fought. Strength and courage weren't feelings he already had. They were something he had to choose, over and over.

God doesn't tell Joshua to be fearless. Fear and courage can exist in the same breath. God says "I will be with you" and then asks Joshua to move anyway.

Jericho's walls didn't fall because the Israelites were militarily superior. They fell because a people did a strange, obedient thing day after day until something finally broke open.

You might be standing in front of your own walls right now — something that hasn't moved no matter how hard you've pushed. Joshua's story asks: what would it look like to keep showing up, trusting that the walls are not the final word?

Historical Background

Joshua was likely written by Joshua himself, with additions made by priests after his death. It captures one of the most anticipated moments in Israel's story — the moment the Israelites finally crossed into the land they'd been promised for generations.

The people had spent forty years wandering the desert after leaving Egypt. Moses led them through all of it, but he died just before they arrived. Joshua stepped up as the new leader, tasked with actually taking possession of what God had promised.

Joshua comes right after Deuteronomy, where Moses gave his final speeches and said goodbye. After Joshua, Judges picks up — and things get far messier. This book is the high point between those two eras.

One thing to know going in: there is real military violence here. Whole cities are destroyed. That can feel jarring. These stories were written by people who believed God was keeping a very old promise, and that conviction shapes everything they describe.
