“Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.”
My Notes
What Does Judges 6:33 Mean?
"Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel." The COALITION against Israel forms: not one enemy but THREE — Midianites, Amalekites, and the children of the east (Bedouin raiders from the desert). The triple alliance gathers and camps in the VALLEY OF JEZREEL — the most fertile, strategic valley in all of Israel. The enemy doesn't attack the wilderness. They occupy the BREADBASKET. They camp on the BEST LAND. The strategy is to control the food supply.
The phrase "were gathered together" (ne'esfu yachdav — were gathered as one) shows UNITY among the enemies: three different groups with three different origins unite for ONE purpose — destroying Israel. The enemy coalition is more unified than Israel often is. The opposition cooperates. The adversaries coordinate. The enemies who might otherwise compete with each other find common cause in attacking God's people.
The VALLEY OF JEZREEL location is strategic: Jezreel means 'God sows' — this is where God's agricultural blessing is most visible, the broad plain where grain grows abundantly. The enemy occupies the place of GOD'S SOWING. The oppressor camps on the HARVEST. The coalition takes the food before Israel can eat it. Judges 6:4 confirms: they 'destroyed the increase of the earth... and left no sustenance for Israel.' The strategy is STARVATION — control the valley, control the food, control the nation.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What place of provision — what 'valley of Jezreel' — has the enemy occupied in your life?
- 2.What does the enemies being MORE UNIFIED than God's people teach about the coordination of opposition?
- 3.How does the strategy of occupying the FOOD SUPPLY (not attacking directly) describe how oppression targets your provision?
- 4.Where are you 'threshing wheat in a winepress' — processing your sustenance in hiding because of fear?
Devotional
THREE enemies — Midianites, Amalekites, and eastern raiders — gather together and camp in the Valley of Jezreel. Not in the hills. Not in the desert. In the VALLEY — the most fertile land in Israel, the place where God's agricultural blessing is most abundant. The enemy doesn't just attack. It OCCUPIES the place where God provides.
The coalition is UNIFIED: three groups becoming one. The enemies cooperate against Israel even when Israel's own tribes struggle to cooperate with each other. The opposition coordinates. The adversaries work together. The enemy alliance in the valley is a picture of organized, strategic, coordinated attack on your provision.
The JEZREEL VALLEY strategy is starvation: camp on the farmland. Destroy the crops. Eat the harvest. Leave nothing (Judges 6:4 — 'left no sustenance for Israel'). The enemy doesn't need to kill everyone. Just control the FOOD. Occupy the place of PROVISION. Camp on the place where God SOWS. The strategy targets the SOURCE of life, not life itself. Cut the supply, and the rest follows.
This is the context for Gideon's calling: while the enemy occupies Jezreel, Gideon is threshing wheat in a WINEPRESS (6:11) — hiding his food-processing in the wrong place, using fear-driven methods to preserve what little he has. The oppression has made normal agriculture IMPOSSIBLE. The valley that should be feeding Israel is feeding the enemy instead.
What 'valley of Jezreel' — what place of provision and blessing — has the enemy occupied in your life?
