My Notes
What Does Leviticus 19:2 Mean?
Leviticus 19:2 is one of the most foundational commands in all of Scripture: "Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy." The command is total — spoken to the entire congregation, not just the priests. And the basis isn't moral theory. It's God's own character.
The word "holy" — qadosh — means set apart, distinct, other. When applied to God, it describes His absolute otherness — His moral perfection, His separation from all that is impure, His transcendent uniqueness. When applied to Israel, it describes what they're called to become: a people whose way of life is visibly different from the nations around them because they belong to a God who is different from all other gods.
The logic is: be like Me because you're Mine. The holiness command isn't arbitrary. It flows from relationship. Because Israel belongs to a holy God, their lives should reflect His character. The rest of Leviticus 19 is remarkable for its range — it includes commands about honesty in business, justice for the poor, treatment of the disabled, love for strangers, and the famous "love thy neighbour as thyself" (verse 18). Holiness in Leviticus isn't about being pious or withdrawn. It's about living every dimension of human life — economic, social, relational — in a way that mirrors the character of the God you belong to.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does holiness mean to you — something mystical and unreachable, or something practical that shows up in daily life?
- 2.Which area of Leviticus 19's definition of holiness — business ethics, treatment of the vulnerable, honest relationships — challenges you most?
- 3.How does the basis 'because I am holy' change your motivation for pursuing holiness compared to rule-following?
- 4.If holiness is meant for the entire congregation — not just the spiritual elite — what does that mean for how you live this week?
Devotional
"Be holy, for I am holy." That's the entire basis. Not "be holy because it's good for society" or "be holy to earn God's approval." Be holy because the God you belong to is holy — and belonging to Him means becoming like Him.
Holiness sounds intimidating until you see what Leviticus 19 actually means by it. The chapter that follows this command doesn't talk about mystical experiences or extreme spiritual discipline. It talks about not stealing. Paying workers on time. Not cursing the deaf or tripping the blind. Being honest with your scales. Not holding grudges. Loving your neighbor. Holiness, in God's definition, is profoundly practical. It's how you treat the person behind the counter. How you handle a disagreement. Whether your business practices are honest. Whether you notice the vulnerable person in the room.
The standard is God Himself — which means you'll never fully arrive. But the invitation isn't to achieve perfection. It's to reflect the character of the One you belong to in every area of your life. Not just the spiritual areas. The financial ones. The relational ones. The mundane ones that nobody photographs or posts about. "Ye shall be holy" — all of you, not just the spiritual elite. Every person in the congregation. Holiness isn't a specialist calling. It's the baseline description of what it means to be God's people. And it starts wherever you are right now, with whatever you're doing today.
