My Notes
What Does Luke 14:26 Mean?
Jesus states what may be the most shocking discipleship requirement in the Gospels: if any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
The word hate (miseo) has generated extensive discussion. In Semitic usage, hate often functions as a comparative term meaning to love less or to place second. Genesis 29:31 describes Leah as hated when the context shows she was merely loved less than Rachel. Jesus is not commanding emotional hostility toward family. He is establishing priority — following him must take precedence over every other attachment, including the most sacred human bonds.
The list is comprehensive and escalating: father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters — every family relationship — and then his own life also. The final item reveals the true scope: discipleship requires placing Christ above self-preservation. The cost is total.
He cannot be my disciple — the language is absolute. This is not an invitation to exceptional Christians. It is the baseline requirement. Anyone who comes to Jesus without this radical prioritization cannot — not should not, not will struggle to — cannot be his disciple. The word is dunamai — it is not possible.
The context (v.25-33) includes the parables of counting the cost: the tower builder and the warring king. Jesus wants followers who have calculated what discipleship costs before they begin.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does it mean to 'hate' family in the context of discipleship — and how is this different from emotional hostility?
- 2.Why does Jesus make this the baseline requirement rather than an advanced level of discipleship?
- 3.What relationship or attachment would be hardest for you to place second to following Christ?
- 4.Have you actually counted the cost of discipleship — or are you following on terms you set yourself?
Devotional
If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. Read it again slowly. Father. Mother. Wife. Children. Brothers. Sisters. Your own life. Every relationship you hold most dear — every bond that defines you — must be secondary to Jesus. Or you cannot be his disciple.
Hate does not mean emotional hostility. It means radical priority. It means that when following Jesus and keeping your family comfortable point in different directions, you follow Jesus. When obedience to Christ and self-preservation conflict, you choose obedience. The hate is not cruelty toward people. It is the refusal to let any person — including yourself — outrank Jesus.
He cannot be my disciple. Cannot. Not should not. Not will find it difficult. Cannot. The word means it is not possible. You cannot follow Jesus halfheartedly. You cannot be his disciple while reserving the right to put someone else first when it matters most. Discipleship is not a hobby with flexible hours. It is total allegiance.
This verse is uncomfortable because most of us have not counted this cost. We follow Jesus in ways that are convenient, in spaces where it does not conflict with family expectations or personal comfort. But Jesus is asking: if it came down to it — if following me cost you the relationship you treasure most, if it cost you your own life — would you still come? That is the price of admission. Not theoretical willingness. Actual readiness to prioritize him above everything.
