“And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.”
My Notes
What Does Luke 16:8 Mean?
Luke 16:8 contains one of Jesus' most surprising commendations: "And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light."
The parable's steward has been squandering his master's goods and, facing termination, uses his remaining authority to discount debts owed to his master — securing future relationships at his employer's expense. He's dishonest. And the master commends him — not for the dishonesty, but for the shrewdness. The Greek phronimōs — "wisely" — means with practical intelligence, with strategic foresight.
Jesus' observation stings: "the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light." The phrase en tē genea tē heautōn — "in their generation" — means within their own sphere, operating by their own rules. Worldly people apply more strategic energy to securing their temporal futures than believers apply to securing their eternal ones. The dishonest steward planned ahead with ruthless efficiency. The children of light coast through their spiritual lives with passive vagueness.
Jesus isn't endorsing dishonesty. He's shaming passivity. If a crook applies this much ingenuity to securing his earthly future, why don't you apply the same energy to your eternal one?
Reflection Questions
- 1.Are you more strategic about your temporal future or your eternal one? What does the imbalance look like?
- 2.Jesus says worldly people are shrewder than believers. Where do you see that gap in your own life?
- 3.What would it look like to bring the same energy to your spiritual investments that you bring to your financial or career planning?
- 4.The steward used his remaining authority to secure his future. What authority or resources do you have right now that you're not deploying for eternal purposes?
Devotional
A crook gets commended by Jesus. Not for the cheating — for the strategy. The dishonest steward saw the crisis coming and used every available resource, every remaining moment of authority, to secure his future. He was smart about it. Ruthlessly, creatively smart.
And Jesus looks at His followers and says: why aren't you that smart about the things that actually matter?
The children of this world hustle. They strategize. They plan ahead. They use every advantage to position themselves for the future. They lose sleep over their portfolios, their networks, their contingency plans. And the children of light? We're passive. We float through our spiritual lives assuming everything will work out, applying none of the creative energy to eternal investments that the world applies to temporary ones.
That's the rebuke buried in this bizarre parable. Jesus isn't praising dishonesty. He's shaming spiritual laziness. If a con man applies more strategic intelligence to securing his retirement than you apply to securing your eternal reward, something is deeply wrong with your priorities.
What if you brought the same energy to your spiritual life that you bring to your career? The same strategic planning to generosity that you bring to your budget? The same relentless foresight to building the kingdom that you bring to building your résumé? That's what Jesus is asking. Not to be dishonest. To be as smart about the right things as the world is about the wrong ones.
