- Verse 17
“And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.”
My Notes
What Does Luke 19:17 Mean?
"Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities." The nobleman returns and rewards the faithful servant with governance over ten cities. The proportionality is staggering: one mina (about three months' wages) faithfully managed produces authority over ten cities. The reward vastly exceeds the test.
The phrase "faithful in a very little" reframes the servant's accomplishment: the mina was a very little thing. Not a fortune. Not a kingdom-sized trust. A small amount, faithfully managed. And the reward for managing a small amount well is a massive expansion of responsibility.
The principle is graduated trust: prove yourself faithful with small things, and larger things follow. The test isn't about the size of the resource — it's about the quality of the stewardship. One mina managed well qualifies you for ten cities. The size of the initial trust is irrelevant; the faithfulness is everything.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What 'very little thing' in your life might be the test for something much larger?
- 2.How does knowing God considers your current assignment 'very little' change your perspective?
- 3.What would it look like to be faithful enough with your current resources to qualify for ten cities?
- 4.Are you managing your 'mina' with kingdom-level seriousness?
Devotional
Faithful in a very little — and given authority over ten cities. The math is absurd: a few months' wages, handled well, produces governance over a region. The reward is comically disproportionate to the test.
The key phrase is 'a very little.' The master calls the mina very little. Not from the servant's perspective — from the master's. To the servant, the mina was significant. To the nobleman who owns a kingdom, it's pocket change. The test was always small in the master's eyes. Your stewardship of what feels enormous to you is, in God's perspective, a very little thing.
But the very-little test determines the very-large reward. Ten cities for one mina. The ratio is God's way of saying: I'm not measuring the amount. I'm measuring the faithfulness. Handle the small thing well, and the big thing is yours.
This is simultaneously encouraging and challenging. Encouraging because your current assignment — however small, however insignificant it feels — is the audition for something enormous. The mina you're managing right now is the test for the ten cities. Challenging because the test is happening right now, with the resources you currently have, and there's no deferring it to a later season.
What very-little thing are you managing right now? And are you managing it with the quality that qualifies you for ten cities?
