“And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.”
My Notes
What Does Matthew 2:12 Mean?
"And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way." The wise men receive divine guidance AFTER worship: having found the Christ, having offered their gifts, they're warned in a dream not to go back to Herod. The return route is DIFFERENT from the arrival route. The encounter with Christ changes the path. You don't go home the same way you came.
The phrase "warned of God in a dream" (chrematisthentes kat' onar — having been divinely instructed/warned in a dream) means God communicates with GENTILE wise men through dreams: the divine warning comes to NON-ISRAELITES. The Magi aren't Jewish. They're pagan astrologers from the east. And God speaks to them directly — through the same dream-communication He used with Joseph (1:20). The divine speech crosses every cultural and religious boundary to protect the child.
The "departed into their own country another way" (di' alles hodou anechorasan eis ten choran auton — by another road they withdrew to their region) means the encounter REDIRECTED their path: they came one way. They leave ANOTHER way. The worship of Christ literally changes the route home. The path you walked to find Jesus isn't the path you walk after finding Him. The journey is altered by the encounter.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What 'Herod' are you being warned not to return to after encountering Christ?
- 2.What does God warning PAGAN wise men in a dream teach about who God will communicate with?
- 3.How does 'departing another way' model what happens to your life-path after genuine worship?
- 4.What old route do you need to abandon — and what new way is the encounter creating?
Devotional
They went home a different way. The encounter with Christ changed the route. They came one direction. They left another. You don't return the same way you arrived once you've worshiped the King.
The 'warned of God in a dream' reveals God speaking to PAGANS to protect His Son: the Magi are Gentile astrologers — as far from Jewish orthodoxy as you can get. And God speaks to them DIRECTLY. Through a dream. The same medium He uses with Joseph. The divine communication ignores every religious boundary to accomplish its purpose. God speaks to whoever needs to hear, regardless of their theological credentials.
The 'they should not return to Herod' is the protection operating THROUGH the wise men: by redirecting the Magi's route, God protects the infant Jesus from Herod's murderous investigation. The wise men become instruments of divine protection by simply going home a different way. Their obedience to the dream saves the Christ child. Their alternate route is the mechanism of preservation.
The 'departed into their own country another way' is the literal and spiritual reality of every genuine encounter with Christ: you came one way. You leave another. The path that brought you TO the encounter is not the path that takes you FROM it. The worship changes the direction. The meeting changes the route. You don't return to Herod — to the old power structures, the old loyalties, the old path — after you've met the King.
What 'Herod' are you being warned not to return to — and what 'other way' is the encounter with Christ creating?
