- Verse 10
“And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut.”
My Notes
What Does Matthew 25:10 Mean?
"And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut." The foolish virgins left to buy oil at the WORST POSSIBLE MOMENT: the bridegroom arrived while they were gone. The ready ones went IN. The door was SHUT. The three events happen in rapid succession: arrived, entered, closed. The foolish missed the window. The prepared entered the celebration. The door separated the two groups permanently.
The phrase "while they went to buy" (aperchomenōn de autōn agorasai — while they were going to buy) identifies the TIMING of the failure: the foolish left to correct their mistake at the moment when the opportunity arrived. They were FIXING the problem when the ANSWER appeared. The buying-trip happened at the exact wrong time. The preparation that should have been completed BEFORE was attempted DURING — and the 'during' was too late.
The "the door was shut" (ekleisthē hē thyra — the door was closed/locked) is the FINALITY that makes the parable terrifying: the door doesn't stay open for latecomers. It SHUTS. The entry opportunity has a CLOSING time. The door that was open to the prepared is CLOSED to the tardy. The door doesn't discriminate between 'almost ready' and 'completely unprepared.' Shut is shut.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What preparation are you neglecting that can't be done at the last minute?
- 2.What does the door SHUTTING (not staying open for latecomers) teach about the finality of some opportunities?
- 3.How does the foolish virgins' CORRECT action at the WRONG time describe preparation-failure?
- 4.What does readiness being the ONLY qualification for entering teach about what matters when the moment arrives?
Devotional
While they were out buying oil — the bridegroom came. The ready went in. The door shut. The three events happened in rapid succession: arrived, entered, CLOSED. The foolish missed the moment because they were fixing what should have been fixed before.
The 'while they went to buy' is the cruelest timing: the foolish virgins RECOGNIZED their problem (no oil). They ACTED on it (went to buy). They made the RIGHT decision (get more oil). But the timing was FATAL. They left at the exact moment the bridegroom arrived. The correction that would have worked YESTERDAY is useless TODAY. The preparation that should have happened beforehand can't be accomplished in the moment.
The 'they that were ready went in' distinguishes the groups by one word: READY. The wise virgins didn't do anything dramatic at the moment of arrival. They were simply READY. The readiness was their preparation. The oil was their forethought. The being-ready was the only qualification for entering. The entering wasn't earned by last-minute heroism. It was earned by prior preparation.
The 'the door was shut' is the three words that define the parable's terror: SHUT. Not ajar. Not slightly closed. Not available for negotiation. SHUT. The door that was open has CLOSED. The opportunity that existed has EXPIRED. The entry that was available has become unavailable. And when the foolish return and knock (verse 11), the answer from inside is: 'I know you not.' The door doesn't reopen. The closure is final.
What preparation are you neglecting that can't be accomplished at the last minute — and is the bridegroom closer than you think?
