- Verse 28
“And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding;”
My Notes
What Does Nehemiah 10:28 Mean?
"And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding." The covenant renewal includes everyone: priests, Levites, gatekeepers, singers, Temple servants, converts, and their entire families — wives, sons, and daughters. The list is comprehensive and deliberately inclusive.
The phrase "separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God" describes converts or returnees who chose covenant faithfulness over assimilation: they separated FROM the surrounding cultures and separated UNTO God's law. The separation is directional — away from one thing and toward another. The identity change is defined by both what they left and what they joined.
The qualification "every one having knowledge, and having understanding" (kol yode'a mevin) echoes Nehemiah 8:2 — the same comprehension standard for hearing the Law now applies to signing the covenant. Understanding is the entry requirement for commitment.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What covenant commitment is God asking you to make — with full knowledge and understanding?
- 2.What does separating FROM something AND unto something teach about the two-part nature of commitment?
- 3.How does the inclusion of wives and daughters challenge the idea that faith is an individual, male-led decision?
- 4.What does 'having knowledge and understanding' as the only entry requirement change about who can participate?
Devotional
Everyone signed. Priests and gatekeepers. Singers and Temple servants. Converts and families. Wives and daughters. Everyone with knowledge and understanding joined the covenant. The commitment wasn't limited to the leaders. It was extended to every person capable of understanding what they were committing to.
The 'separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God' describes the converts' journey in two movements: they separated FROM something and separated UNTO something. The leaving and the joining are both part of the commitment. You can't just leave the old. You have to join the new. You can't just separate from the culture. You have to separate unto the Law. The conversion requires both the departure and the destination.
The inclusion of 'their wives, their sons, and their daughters' makes the commitment familial: this isn't an individual decision. It's a household commitment. The covenant shapes families, not just individuals. The wives aren't spectators to their husbands' faith. They're participants in the covenant on their own terms.
The 'every one having knowledge and having understanding' repeats the comprehension criterion from chapter 8: the only requirement for covenant participation is understanding. If you know what you're committing to, you qualify. The covenant doesn't filter by gender, age, social status, or priestly lineage. It filters by comprehension. Understanding is the door.
What commitment is God asking you to make — and do you have the knowledge and understanding to make it fully?
