Numbers 11:23

Numbers 11:23
And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD'S hand waxed short? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.

My Notes

What Does Numbers 11:23 Mean?

"Is the LORD's hand waxed short?" God challenges Moses with a rhetorical question: has My hand become too short? Has My reach diminished? Has My power decreased? The question responds to Moses' doubt about feeding the entire nation with meat (verse 22: "shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them?"). Moses calculated the logistics and concluded: impossible. God asks: has My capacity shrunk since you last checked?

The "short hand" metaphor describes limited reach — an arm that can't extend far enough to accomplish the task. God's question inverts it: My hand hasn't shortened. My reach hasn't diminished. The limitation isn't in My capacity. It's in your imagination.

The follow-up — "thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass" — shifts from question to promise: watch. The proof is coming. The word I spoke will materialize. Your doubt will be addressed by demonstration, not by argument.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What are you calculating as impossible that God's unchanged hand could reach?
  • 2.Has something changed about God's power since your last miracle — or just about your faith?
  • 3.Why does God answer doubt with demonstration rather than argument?
  • 4.What 'short hand' limitation are you projecting onto a God with unlimited reach?

Devotional

Has My hand gotten shorter? Has My power diminished since the last miracle? Moses calculated the logistics of feeding two million people meat and concluded: impossible. God's response: has something changed about Me that I'm not aware of?

The question is devastating because Moses just watched God provide manna daily for months. The God who rained bread from heaven is being asked whether He can also provide meat. The God who parted the Red Sea is being questioned about whether He can handle a dinner order. The hand that split the ocean — has it shortened?

The short-hand metaphor is about reach: can God's arm extend far enough to do this particular thing? Moses' doubt says: no, this is too big. The numbers don't work. The logistics are impossible. God says: My arm is the same length it was at the Red Sea. The arm that reached across the sea can reach across the wilderness. Nothing has changed about My capacity.

The shift from question to demonstration — 'thou shalt see whether my word shall come to pass' — means God doesn't argue against doubt. He demonstrates against it. You don't believe My hand can do this? Watch. The proof will address your doubt more effectively than the argument.

What are you calculating as impossible that God's hand could easily reach? What logistics are you running that conclude 'can't be done' because you're measuring God's arm by your own? The hand hasn't shortened. The arm hasn't shrunk. The reach is the same as it was at your last miracle.

Has God's hand shortened since the last time He showed up?
