Proverbs 15:24

Proverbs 15:24
The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath.

My Notes

What Does Proverbs 15:24 Mean?

"The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath." The wise person's path goes UPWARD — toward life, toward elevation, toward God. The direction is deliberate: going up is how you depart from hell below. The wise person's trajectory is vertical. The destination above is chosen by departing from the destination below.

The phrase "way of life is above" (orach chayyim lema'lah lemaskil — the path of life is upward for the one with insight) gives wisdom a directional orientation: the wise person looks UP. The path doesn't just go forward. It goes HIGHER. The life that wisdom produces has altitude. The wise person's journey is an ascent.

The "depart from hell beneath" (lema'an sur mishe'ol mattah — in order to turn away from Sheol below) makes the upward movement purposeful: you go up so you don't go down. The ascending is motivated by the descending. The choice to climb is the choice to avoid the pit. The two directions are mutually exclusive — you're either heading up or heading down.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Is your life trajectory going up — or are you sinking without noticing?
  • 2.What does wisdom having a VERTICAL direction teach about spiritual growth?
  • 3.How does each wise choice add altitude — moving you further from the 'hell beneath'?
  • 4.What decision are you facing right now that is either an ascent or a descent?

Devotional

The way of life goes UP. The wise person climbs — away from hell below, toward life above. The direction of wisdom is vertical. The trajectory is ascent. Every wise choice lifts you higher. Every step of insight takes you further from the pit beneath.

The 'above to the wise' means wisdom has an upward orientation: the wise person doesn't just move forward through life horizontally. They move UPWARD. The decisions, the character, the choices — they create altitude. The wise life is an ascending life. The trajectory goes up because the orientation is up.

The 'depart from hell beneath' gives the climbing its motivation: you go up SO THAT you leave hell behind. The ascent is purposeful. The climbing isn't for its own sake. It's to get away from what's below. Sheol — the grave, the pit, the realm of death — is down there. Wisdom's job is to keep you climbing away from it.

The two directions are mutually exclusive: you can't go up and down simultaneously. Every choice either lifts you or drops you. Every decision either adds altitude or removes it. The wise person understands this and chooses UP — consistently, deliberately, in every decision. The fool wanders horizontally and eventually discovers they've been sinking.

Is your life trajectory going up — and is each choice lifting you further from the pit beneath?
