“Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.”
My Notes
What Does Proverbs 16:5 Mean?
"Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD." Not some proud people. Not the extremely arrogant. Everyone. The universality is deliberate — no proud heart escapes God's response of abomination. And the second half closes the escape hatch: "though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished." Even if they band together, form alliances, create a collective defense — they won't avoid consequences.
The phrase "proud in heart" (govah lev) specifies internal arrogance, not just external behavior. God's response isn't to proud actions but to proud hearts. You can behave humbly and be proud inside. God sees the interior and responds to what's there.
The idiom "hand join in hand" may mean making pacts, forming alliances, or simply being confident in one's own resources. The proud person thinks they can escape consequences through cooperation, connection, or collective power. The proverb says: no. No amount of alliance-building protects the proud heart from divine response.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What pride do you carry that feels justified because it's shared by your community?
- 2.How do you distinguish between healthy confidence and the heart-pride this proverb condemns?
- 3.Why can't alliances or collective agreement protect the proud from consequences?
- 4.Where is your heart elevated above accountability?
Devotional
Pride of heart is an abomination to God. Every single instance of it. No exceptions, no exemptions, no amount of alliance-building or mutual support changes the equation. The proud heart is detestable to God, full stop.
This is one of the hardest proverbs for modern culture to hear, because modern culture celebrates pride. Be proud of yourself. Take pride in your work. Stand tall. And there's a legitimate confidence that's healthy and appropriate. But the pride this proverb addresses is the heart kind — the internal elevation that places yourself above God, above others, above accountability.
The "hand join in hand" detail is revealing. The proud often travel in packs. They form alliances with other proud people, creating echo chambers of mutual elevation. They think: if enough of us agree we're great, we must be. But God isn't impressed by numbers. A million hands joined in mutual pride are still an abomination, one by one.
This proverb strips away every defense the proud heart constructs. Your achievements? Irrelevant to the moral diagnosis. Your allies? Can't protect you. Your collective confidence? God sees through it. The proud heart — no matter how well-defended, well-connected, or well-disguised — is abominable.
Is there pride in your heart that you've justified by surrounding yourself with people who share it?
