“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”
My Notes
What Does Proverbs 4:7 Mean?
"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding." The SUPREME instruction of Proverbs: wisdom is the PRINCIPAL THING — the beginning, the first, the most important. The command is: GET IT. And with ALL your getting — whatever else you acquire, whatever else you pursue, whatever else you accumulate — get UNDERSTANDING. The understanding is the NON-NEGOTIABLE within the negotiable. Whatever else you get, get THIS.
The phrase "wisdom is the principal thing" (reshit chokhmah — the beginning/principal/first of wisdom) can be read as 'the BEGINNING of wisdom' or 'wisdom is the FIRST thing.' Either reading makes wisdom the PRIORITY — either the starting-point (you begin HERE) or the top-priority (this comes FIRST). The ambiguity reinforces the message: wisdom is both WHERE YOU START and WHAT MATTERS MOST.
The phrase "therefore get wisdom" (qeneh chokhmah — acquire/purchase wisdom) uses QANAH — to buy, to acquire, to purchase. The getting is ECONOMIC — wisdom must be BOUGHT, invested in, paid for. The acquisition implies COST. Wisdom isn't free. It requires INVESTMENT — of time, attention, humility, effort. The 'get' is a commercial instruction: invest in THIS.
The phrase "with all thy getting get understanding" (uvkhol qinyanekha qeneh vinah — in all your acquisitions, acquire understanding) makes understanding the MANDATORY PURCHASE within all other purchases: whatever ELSE you're buying — property, security, comfort, status — make sure understanding is IN THE CART. The 'all thy getting' acknowledges you'll acquire MANY things. The instruction: among them ALL, include THIS. Don't leave the market without understanding.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Is understanding included in your current acquisitions — or is the cart missing the principal thing?
- 2.What does wisdom being the PRINCIPAL (first, chief, highest) teach about the hierarchy of what you pursue?
- 3.How does 'get' (qanah — purchase, invest) describe wisdom as something that costs?
- 4.What 'with all thy getting' reality acknowledges that you'll acquire many things — but mandates understanding among them?
Devotional
Wisdom is the PRINCIPAL THING. The first priority. The starting point. The non-negotiable. And the command: GET IT. ACQUIRE it. INVEST in it. And with EVERYTHING ELSE you get — in all your other acquisitions, in all your other pursuits — make sure UNDERSTANDING is included. Don't leave the market without it.
The 'GET' (qanah — purchase, acquire) makes wisdom an INVESTMENT: you don't stumble into wisdom. You BUY it. You invest time, attention, humility, effort. The acquisition has a COST. The wisdom requires a PRICE. The getting implies giving — giving UP something to get THIS thing. The investment isn't free.
The 'WITH ALL THY GETTING' acknowledges REALITY: you WILL acquire things. You'll pursue careers, relationships, possessions, experiences. The proverb doesn't say 'stop getting.' It says 'IN all your getting, get THIS.' The understanding is the MANDATORY ITEM in every shopping list. Whatever else fills the cart, understanding must be IN there.
The PRINCIPAL THING (reshit — first, beginning, chief) makes wisdom the HIERARCHY-TOPPER: among all the things worth pursuing, wisdom sits at the TOP. Not wealth (which sits lower). Not power (which sits lower). Not comfort (which sits lower). WISDOM. The ranking is explicit. The hierarchy is clear. The principal thing outranks every other thing.
What are you GETTING — and is understanding included in the acquisition?
