“Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord .”
My Notes
What Does Proverbs 6:14 Mean?
Solomon describes the troublemaker's interior with diagnostic precision: "Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord." Three characteristics — perverted heart (interior), constant mischief-planning (mental activity), and discord-sowing (social impact). The corruption starts inside, operates through the mind, and produces relational damage.
The word "frowardness" (tahpukoth — perversity, distortions, things turned upside down) describes an interior that inverts moral reality: what's right is treated as wrong and what's wrong is treated as right. The heart doesn't just lean toward evil. It inverts the moral categories. The troublemaker's interior map has north and south switched.
The "continually" (be-kol-eth — at all times, in every moment, without interruption) modifies the mischief-devising: the planning never stops. There's no season when the troublemaker takes a break from scheming. The mischief is always being designed, refined, and prepared for deployment. The mind that devises never rests.
Reflection Questions
- 1.How does the three-stage progression (inverted heart → constant scheming → sown discord) help you identify the troublemaker?
- 2.What does 'continually' (never stops planning mischief) teach about the relentless nature of this character?
- 3.Where might you be sowing discord that traces back to mischief-devising that traces back to an interior inversion?
- 4.How do you respond to someone whose heart-level perversity produces community-level discord?
Devotional
Perversity in his heart. Mischief in his mind — always. Discord in his relationships. Solomon maps the troublemaker from inside to outside: the inverted heart produces the constant scheming that produces the sown discord.
The frowardness (tahpukoth) is the root: the heart has been turned upside down. Moral categories are inverted at the foundation. What should repulse attracts. What should attract repulses. The troublemaker doesn't just make bad decisions. Their moral compass has been reversed. The interior map has north where south should be. Every direction they follow is wrong because the instrument they follow is inverted.
The continual mischief-devising is the activity the inverted heart produces: the mind is always working. Always planning. Always designing the next disruption. There's no off-switch. The troublemaker's mind doesn't rest between schemes — it rolls from one to the next without pause. The mischief isn't occasional. It's the mind's constant state.
The discord-sowing is the social product: what the inverted heart designs through the restless mind, the troublemaker plants in relationships. The discord (madan — strife, contention, quarreling) is sown like seed — deliberately placed in relational soil where it will grow. The troublemaker is an agricultural metaphor: a farmer of conflict, planting strife where peace could grow.
The three-stage progression — heart → mind → relationships — is the reverse engineering of every community's worst person: the person who disrupts everything traces the disruption back to constant planning that traces back to an inverted interior. The discord you see in the group is the product of the scheming you don't see, which is the product of the perversity you can't access.
Do you recognize this progression in anyone around you — or in yourself?
