What Does Proverbs 9:11 Mean?
"For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased." WISDOM'S PROMISE — stated in first person: BY ME — through wisdom, through the relationship with wisdom, through the practice of the wise life — your DAYS will be MULTIPLIED and your YEARS will be INCREASED. The reward for wisdom is LONGEVITY. The fruit of the wise life is MORE LIFE. Wisdom doesn't just improve the quality. It increases the QUANTITY.
The phrase "by me thy days shall be multiplied" (ki vi yirbu yamekha — for by/through me your days will be multiplied) uses RABAH — to multiply, to increase, to make many. The days are MULTIPLIED — not just extended but EXPANDED. The multiplication implies exponential increase, not linear addition. The wisdom-life doesn't add a few days. It MULTIPLIES them. The return on the investment exceeds the investment.
The phrase "the years of thy life shall be increased" (veyosifu lekha shenot chayyim — they will add to you years of life) uses YASAPH — to add, to increase, to continue. The YEARS are ADDED — supplemental time, bonus years, additional life. The wisdom-investment returns ADDITIONAL years. The time spent pursuing wisdom comes BACK — and more. The investment PAYS.
The FIRST PERSON — 'by ME' — makes Wisdom the AGENT: the multiplication doesn't come from medicine, diet, or genetics. It comes from WISDOM HERSELF. The relationship WITH wisdom is what produces the longevity. The 'by me' makes Wisdom the CAUSE and the multiplied days the EFFECT. The personified figure claims direct responsibility for the extended life.

BY ME — through Wisdom — your days MULTIPLY and your years INCREASE. Wisdom promises LONGEVITY. The wise life is the LONGER life. The fruit of pursuing wisdom isn't just better decisions. It's MORE TIME. The quality AND the quantity of life increase through the wisdom-relationship.
The 'MULTIPLIED' days (rabah — increase, expand) exceeds simple addition: the days aren't just extended by a little. They're MULTIPLIED — expanded, amplified, increased beyond the normal calculation. The wisdom-return is EXPONENTIAL. The investment of time in wisdom produces a MULTIPLICATION of time in life. The math favors the wise.
The 'ADDED years' (yasaph — add, supplement) makes the increase SUPPLEMENTAL: the years are ADDED — bonus time, extra life, supplemental existence. The wise person receives ADDITIONAL years that the unwise person doesn't get. The addition is a GIFT — extra time provided through the wisdom-relationship.
The FIRST PERSON claim ('by ME') makes Wisdom the PERSONAL agent: not 'through wise choices you'll live longer' (abstract) but 'BY ME your days multiply' (personal). Wisdom herself takes responsibility for the longevity. The personification makes the promise RELATIONAL — it's not a principle that works automatically. It's a PERSON who produces the result. The relationship produces the years.
