Psalms

Old Testament

Summary

There's no single storyline — Psalms is more like a sprawling, centuries-long playlist than a narrative. Each poem stands alone, and they vary wildly in tone.

Some are pure, almost breathless praise. Others are laments that hold nothing back: 'Where are you, God? How long will you hide?'

Then there are the imprecatory psalms — where the writer asks God to destroy their enemies in graphic terms. They're uncomfortable, and they're here too, unedited.

Psalm 22 opens with 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' — the same words Jesus would speak from the cross centuries later. These poems stretch across all of Scripture.

At their core, the Psalms offer a kind of permission: to bring everything to God. The soaring moments and the shattered ones. Every shade of human experience has a poem here.

Devotional

One of the most striking things about Psalms is what it refuses to do: tidy up. Psalm 88 ends in darkness with no resolution. Psalm 137 contains a line so violent most people skip past it quickly.

The writers of these poems had clearly not been told that faith should sound a certain way. They complained to God. They accused him. They asked whether he'd forgotten his own promises.

That honesty is the gift. Psalms gives language to feelings that can seem too raw, too angry, or too desperate to bring into prayer. It says: your full self is allowed here.

Psalm 139 says God has searched and known you completely — your sitting down and your rising up, your thoughts before you've formed them. That kind of total knowing could feel like exposure. In the Psalms, it reads like shelter.

What would it look like to pray a psalm you'd never dare write yourself? What feeling have you been leaving outside the door of your conversations with God?

Historical Background

Psalms is a collection of 150 poems and songs gathered over hundreds of years. Many are credited to David — the shepherd-turned-king — but others are attributed to Moses, Solomon, and various temple musicians.

Think of it as Israel's official songbook, used in worship at the temple in Jerusalem. These weren't private journal entries — many were written to be sung aloud in a crowd.

It sits near the center of the Bible, which feels fitting. Psalms holds the emotional center of Scripture.

The poems are organized into five sections, though most readers move through them one at a time. They span every mood imaginable — raw grief, soaring praise, bitter anger, desperate longing. No feeling has to be cleaned up before you bring it here.
