- Verse 5
“And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.”
My Notes
What Does Revelation 11:5 Mean?
The two witnesses of Revelation 11 are given extraordinary power: fire from their mouths devours anyone who tries to harm them. The repetition — "if any man will hurt them" appears twice — emphasizes the completeness of their protection during their appointed ministry.
The fire imagery recalls Elijah calling down fire from heaven (2 Kings 1:10) and Jeremiah's description of God making His word "like a fire" in the prophet's mouth (Jeremiah 5:14). These witnesses embody the authority of Israel's prophetic tradition — their words carry lethal power because they speak for God.
But this protection is temporary. In verse 7, after they finish their testimony, the beast kills them. God's protection wasn't permanent invulnerability — it was mission-specific. They were untouchable until their work was done. Once the testimony was complete, God allowed what He had previously prevented.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Does the idea that you're 'untouchable until your work is done' comfort you or challenge you — and why?
- 2.How does this passage change how you view the opposition you've faced in your life?
- 3.What is the testimony God has put in your mouth — the assignment only you can fulfill?
- 4.How do you reconcile God's temporary protection here with the witnesses' eventual death?
Devotional
Here's a truth woven into this dramatic image: you are untouchable until your work is done.
The two witnesses had a mission. During that mission, nothing could stop them. Fire consumed anyone who tried. But once the mission was complete, God permitted what He had previously blocked. The protection was for the purpose, not for the person's comfort.
This isn't a promise that nothing bad will ever happen to you. It's something deeper: nothing can happen to you that falls outside God's purpose for your life. While your assignment is active, you are protected in ways you may never fully see. When the assignment shifts, so does the protection — not because God stopped caring, but because the mission changed.
That's simultaneously comforting and sobering. Comforting because it means the attacks you've survived weren't lucky breaks. God had fire between you and what wanted to destroy you. Sobering because it means your protection is tethered to your faithfulness. Stay in your assignment. Do the work you've been given. And trust that as long as there's testimony in your mouth, you're not going anywhere.
