Revelation 12:15

Revelation 12:15
And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.

My Notes

What Does Revelation 12:15 Mean?

The serpent (dragon/Satan) attacks the woman (Israel/the faithful community) with water from his mouth — a flood designed to sweep her away. The attack is oral: what comes from the serpent's mouth is a torrent intended to drown. Words, lies, accusations, propaganda — the flood from the mouth represents speech-based assault.

The woman has already been protected by God (verse 14 — given wings to fly to the wilderness), and the earth itself intervenes (verse 16 — the ground opens and swallows the flood). The serpent's water attack fails because creation cooperates with God's protection of the woman. The earth itself fights on the woman's behalf.

The flood-from-mouth imagery connects to the serpent's original weapon in Eden: speech. The serpent deceived Eve through words. The dragon attacks the woman through a flood of words. The weapon hasn't changed across the biblical narrative — the serpent has always been most dangerous through what comes out of his mouth.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What 'flood from the serpent's mouth' (lies, accusations, propaganda) is currently aimed at you?
  • 2.How does the earth 'swallowing the flood' illustrate God using creation to protect you?
  • 3.Why is speech the serpent's oldest and most consistent weapon?
  • 4.Where do you need to trust that the defense is already built into the ground beneath your feet?

Devotional

The serpent opens his mouth and a flood pours out. Not fire, not armies — water. A torrent of words designed to sweep the woman away. The dragon's oldest weapon is his mouth, and he hasn't upgraded.

Since Eden, the serpent's primary tool has been speech. He deceived Eve with words. He accused Job with words. He tempted Jesus with words. And here, at the climax of cosmic history, his attack is still oral — a flood from his mouth, aimed at the woman, intended to drown.

The flood represents the torrent of deception, accusation, and propaganda that the enemy directs at God's people. Not physical attack (that comes through the beast). Speech attack. The volume and force of lies, half-truths, and accusations designed to overwhelm — to sweep you off your feet the way a flash flood sweeps away everything in its path.

But the earth opens its mouth and swallows the flood. Creation itself intervenes. The ground cooperates with God's protection. The serpent's water meets the earth's absorption. The attack is real but the defense is already in place — built into the very ground beneath the woman's feet.

When the flood of words comes — the lies about your identity, the accusations about your past, the propaganda that says God doesn't care — remember: the earth swallows it. The ground you're standing on is designed to absorb what the serpent throws. The defense isn't something you create. It's something creation provides.
