- Chapter 19
- Verse 13
“And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.”
My Notes
What Does Revelation 19:13 Mean?
Christ returns — and John describes what He's wearing: a vesture dipped in blood. His name: the Word of God. The blood-dipped garment and the divine title appear together: the warrior and the communicator are the same person. The one who speaks creation into existence is the one whose clothes are stained with the blood of battle.
The blood on the garment connects to Isaiah 63:1-3, where God treads the winepress of judgment and His garments are stained with the blood of the nations. The blood isn't Christ's own blood (that was shed at Calvary). This is the blood of judgment — the blood of the enemies of God, staining the clothes of the one who executed justice.
"The Word of God" — the same title from John 1:1 ("In the beginning was the Word"). The Word who created all things now judges all things. The name that opened the Gospel of John closes the book of Revelation. The first and last word is the Word.
Reflection Questions
- 1.How does the blood-dipped robe (judgment, not sacrifice) adjust your picture of the returning Christ?
- 2.What does the title 'Word of God' mean when applied to a warrior on a horse rather than a baby in a manger?
- 3.Can you hold together the Lamb (Revelation 5) and the warrior (Revelation 19) as the same Jesus?
- 4.Does this image of Christ's return comfort you or terrify you — and which response is appropriate?
Devotional
A robe dipped in blood. And His name is the Word of God.
The returning Christ doesn't arrive in white. He arrives in blood. Not His own — that blood was shed at Calvary. This blood is from the winepress of judgment (verse 15). The garment is stained with the evidence of divine justice executed on the enemies of God.
The same person who said "let there be light" now wears a blood-dipped robe. The same Word who created the world now judges it. The title "Word of God" connects the beginning to the end: John 1:1 says the Word was with God and was God. Revelation 19:13 says the Word rides a white horse with a blood-stained vesture. The creator and the judge are the same person.
This is the Jesus that sanitized Christianity has edited out: the warrior. The judge. The one whose return isn't gentle but devastating. The one whose clothes are stained not with His own sacrifice (that's complete) but with the blood of His enemies.
The blood-dipped robe and the name "Word of God" together say: this is the same Jesus. The one who spoke grace from the cross and speaks judgment from the horse. The one who was the lamb (Revelation 5) and is now the lion. The Word that created is the Word that concludes.
When He returns, He returns speaking. The Word of God. And His words, this time, aren't parables and blessings. They're a sword (verse 15). The Word that once healed now strikes. The same voice. Different purpose. Same God.
Behold, the Word of God. In a blood-dipped robe. On a white horse. And the final chapter belongs to Him.
