Revelation 21:8

Revelation 21:8
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

My Notes

What Does Revelation 21:8 Mean?

Revelation catalogs those excluded from the new creation: the fearful, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, whoremongers, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars. Their portion is the lake of fire — the second death.

The list begins with the fearful and the unbelieving — not dramatic sins of violence but failures of faith. Cowardice and unbelief head the list. In the context of Revelation, these refer to those who abandoned faith under persecution rather than endure.

The 'second death' is distinguished from physical death. It is final, permanent separation from God — the ultimate consequence of persistent, unrepentant rejection of God's offer.

This verse follows immediately after the promise that God will wipe every tear away (21:4). The contrast is intentional: the new creation is breathtakingly beautiful, and the exclusion from it is devastatingly final. Both realities are presented without softening.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Why do you think 'the fearful' and 'unbelieving' head the list rather than more dramatic sins?
  • 2.How does this verse motivate faithfulness without creating unhealthy fear?
  • 3.What is the difference between feeling fear and being defined by fear?
  • 4.How do you hold the beauty of Revelation 21:4 alongside the severity of 21:8?

Devotional

This verse is difficult because it is meant to be. After the glorious promise of no more tears, no more death, no more pain — Revelation immediately names who will not be there.

The list starts not with murderers or sorcerers but with the fearful and unbelieving. Those who let fear override their faith. Those who refused to believe when belief was costly. That is sobering.

The fearful. Not people who felt fear — everyone feels fear. But people who let fear make the final decision. Who chose safety over faithfulness. Who abandoned truth because the cost was too high.

This is not a verse to weaponize against others. It is a verse to sit with honestly. Where is fear making your decisions? Where is unbelief quietly steering your life?

The lake of fire is presented as the alternative to the new Jerusalem. Two destinations. Two outcomes. And the distinguishing factor is not perfection — it is faith. Even fearful, imperfect, struggling faith that chooses to hold on.
