Revelation 9:2

Revelation 9:2
And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.

My Notes

What Does Revelation 9:2 Mean?

"And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit." The bottomless pit is OPENED — and SMOKE erupts like a great furnace, darkening the SUN and the AIR. The first thing that emerges from the abyss isn't the locusts (verse 3). It's SMOKE — the obscuring, choking, light-blocking cloud that precedes the creatures. The darkness comes BEFORE the destruction. The obscuring happens BEFORE the attacking.

The phrase "opened the bottomless pit" (ēnoixen to phrear tēs abyssou — he opened the shaft/well of the abyss) describes the UNLOCKING of a confined evil: the pit was CLOSED — sealed, locked, contained. The opening releases what was contained. The abyss (abyssos — the bottomless, the unfathomable deep) has a SHAFT (phrear — a well, a vertical access-point). The evil has been underground. The opening brings it to the surface.

The "smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace" (anebē kapnos ek tou phreatos hōs kapnos kaminou megalēs — ascended smoke from the shaft as smoke of a great furnace) makes the smoke VOLCANIC in scale: the comparison to a 'great furnace' suggests INDUSTRIAL-SCALE smoke — the kind produced by a massive smelting operation. The volume is immense. The density is total. The smoke doesn't drift. It ERUPTS — ascending from the pit with the force of a furnace's output.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What smoke from the pit has darkened the clarity and breathability of your environment?
  • 2.What does darkness coming BEFORE destruction teach about confusion preceding affliction?
  • 3.How does the pit being OPENED (released from containment) describe the unleashing of confined evil?
  • 4.What sun and air in your life have been darkened by what was released from below?

Devotional

The bottomless pit OPENS. Smoke erupts — like a great furnace. The sun goes dark. The air chokes. The FIRST thing from the abyss isn't the locusts. It's SMOKE — the obscuring cloud that blocks the light before the creatures emerge. The darkness precedes the destruction. The obscuring comes before the attacking.

The 'opened the bottomless pit' describes a RELEASE: the pit was SEALED — contained, locked, holding something underground. The opening is an UNLOCKING — the releasing of what was confined. The abyss (the bottomless, the unfathomable deep) has a SHAFT — an access-point, a vertical corridor from the depths to the surface. The evil that was underground now has a path to the surface.

The 'smoke as of a great furnace' makes the first emission OBSCURING, not attacking: the pit doesn't release CREATURES first. It releases SMOKE. The obscuring comes before the destroying. The darkening happens before the biting. The vision says: when the abyss opens, the FIRST effect is DARKNESS — the loss of clarity, the blocking of light, the choking of air. The confusion precedes the affliction.

The 'sun and air were darkened' describes ENVIRONMENTAL CATASTROPHE: the TWO sources of life — SUNLIGHT (for growth, for vision, for warmth) and AIR (for breathing, for existence) — are both DARKENED. The smoke attacks BOTH. The visibility is gone (no sunlight). The breathability is compromised (darkened air). The environment that sustains life is contaminated by what the pit released.

What 'smoke from the pit' — what obscuring, clarity-destroying influence — has darkened the sun and air in your world?
