- Chapter 20
- Verse 15
“And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's.”
My Notes
What Does 2 Chronicles 20:15 Mean?
A prophet delivers God's message to Jehoshaphat and all Judah: don't be afraid. Don't be dismayed. The great multitude doesn't change the equation. Because the battle isn't yours. It's God's. Five words that redefine everything: "the battle is not yours."
The message addresses the specific fear: the great multitude. Three nations. Overwhelming numbers. And God says: that's not your problem. The battle belongs to me. Your size relative to theirs is irrelevant because I'm the one fighting.
"Be not afraid nor dismayed" — two prohibitions covering both the internal (afraid — the feeling) and the external (dismayed — the paralysis that follows fear). God addresses both: don't feel the terror and don't act on it. The feeling and the response are both covered by the command.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Does 'the battle is not yours, but God's' actually change how you respond to the overwhelming thing you're facing?
- 2.How does naming the specific fear ('this great multitude') make God's 'don't be afraid' more personal?
- 3.What's the difference between fighting God's battle for Him and participating in a battle that's already His?
- 4.Does the strategy (send worshippers, not warriors) make sense — or does it only make sense if the battle truly is God's?
Devotional
The battle is not yours. It's God's. Five words that change everything.
Jehoshaphat is staring at the largest army he's ever faced. Three nations coordinated against one kingdom. The math is certain: Judah cannot win this. And God's prophet stands up and says: this isn't your fight. The battle belongs to God. Your job isn't to win. Your job is to show up. God handles the rest.
"Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude" — God names the specific fear. He doesn't say "don't be afraid in general." He says don't be afraid of THIS. The great multitude. The thing you're looking at right now. The overwhelming force that's making your heart melt. That specific thing. Don't be afraid of it.
The reason: it's not your battle. The multitude isn't your opponent. It's God's. And when God is the fighter, the size of the enemy is irrelevant. God doesn't calculate odds. He doesn't need a numerical advantage. The battle is His, and His capacity is infinite.
This is the most liberating truth in spiritual warfare: you're not the warrior. You're the participant. The battle isn't between you and the enemy. It's between God and the enemy. You're standing on God's side, not fighting God's fight. The distinction changes everything — from anxiety to worship, from strategy to surrender, from military planning to morning praise.
Verse 21 will reveal the strategy: Jehoshaphat sends worshippers ahead of the army. Not soldiers. Singers. Because when the battle is God's, the appropriate human response isn't fighting. It's worship.
The battle is not yours. Breathe. The battle is God's. Sing.
