2 Corinthians 6:7

2 Corinthians 6:7
By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,

My Notes

What Does 2 Corinthians 6:7 Mean?

Paul is describing the arsenal of the Christian life — not in a triumphalist way, but in the middle of a catalogue of hardships. He's just listed afflictions, distresses, beatings, imprisonments, and sleepless nights. And then: the word of truth, the power of God, and armor of righteousness on both sides.

"On the right hand and on the left" means complete protection — offensive and defensive. In Roman military language, the right hand held the sword (offense) and the left hand held the shield (defense). Paul is saying the righteousness of God covers both — whether he's advancing or under attack.

The pairing of "word of truth" and "power of God" is important. Truth without power is just talk. Power without truth is just force. Paul operates with both — and the armor of righteousness ensures his integrity on every side. This isn't theoretical. He's listing these resources in the middle of real suffering, as the things that have actually sustained him.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What do you actually rely on when things get hard — and how does that compare to what Paul describes here?
  • 2.What does it look like to carry 'armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left' in your daily life?
  • 3.Is there a side you're less protected on — offense or defense — and what would it look like to strengthen it?
  • 4.How do you access the 'power of God' practically, not just theoretically?

Devotional

Notice where this verse sits — between imprisonments and dishonor. Paul isn't describing the Christian life from a comfortable position. He's describing what kept him standing while everything around him was falling apart.

The word of truth. The power of God. Armor of righteousness on both sides. These aren't things Paul pulled out in emergencies. They were his daily equipment. The things he wore into every conversation, every beating, every cold night in a prison cell.

What's your daily equipment? When life gets hard — not hypothetically, but right now — what are you actually relying on? Is it the word of truth, or is it your own ability to manage the situation? Is it the power of God, or is it the power of your personality, your network, your coping mechanisms?

Paul had access to the same resources you do. The difference is that he actually used them. Not as last resorts, but as first responses. Truth, power, righteousness — equipped on every side. That's what allowed a tent-maker from Tarsus to outlast every empire that tried to stop him.
