- Chapter 10
- Verse 4
“(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)”
My Notes
What Does 2 Corinthians 10:4 Mean?
Paul describes the weapons of spiritual warfare: not carnal (not physical, not human) but mighty through God. The power of the weapons comes from their divine source, not from human strength.
"To the pulling down of strong holds" — the weapons are effective against fortifications. Strongholds (ochuroma) are fortified positions — entrenched beliefs, habitual patterns, systems of thought that resist God's truth. The weapons pull them down.
"Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God" (v.5) — the targets are intellectual and ideological. Imaginations (logismous — reasonings, arguments), and every elevated thing that positions itself against knowing God. The warfare is in the mind.
"Bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ" — the goal is not just destruction of strongholds. It is the capture of thoughts — every one of them — and their subjection to Christ's authority. The mind is the battlefield. The thoughts are the combatants.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What 'strongholds' — entrenched patterns of false thinking — exist in your mind?
- 2.How are spiritual weapons 'mighty through God' in a way physical weapons are not?
- 3.What does 'bringing every thought captive' to Christ look like practically?
- 4.Where are you fighting spiritual battles with carnal weapons?
Devotional
The weapons of our warfare are not carnal. You are in a war. But the weapons are not physical — not money, not political power, not clever strategy, not institutional influence. The weapons are spiritual. And they are mighty through God.
To the pulling down of strong holds. Strongholds — fortified positions in the mind. Entrenched patterns of thinking that resist truth. Lies that have been believed so long they feel like walls. The spiritual weapons pull them down.
Casting down imaginations. The reasoning that opposes God. The arguments that position themselves against his truth. The elaborate thought structures that keep people from knowing him. Cast down. Not engaged in debate. Cast down — demolished by weapons that are mighty through God.
Bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. Every thought. Not some. Every. Captured and brought under Christ's authority. The mind that was a battlefield becomes an occupied territory — held by Christ, governed by truth.
The warfare is real. The strongholds are real. And the weapons are real — not carnal but mighty. You are not fighting with human resources. You are fighting with weapons that have divine power to demolish what human weapons cannot touch.
What stronghold needs demolishing in your mind? What imagination needs casting down? What thought needs capturing? The weapons are available. And they are mighty through God.
