“Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?”
My Notes
What Does Acts 26:8 Mean?
"Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?" Paul asks the most DIRECT question of his defense: why is resurrection INCREDIBLE to you? If you believe in GOD — the God who created everything from nothing — why is RAISING THE DEAD beyond belief? The question challenges the LOGICAL CONSISTENCY of the audience: if God exists, resurrection is possible. If God is God, raising the dead is within His capability. The incredulity toward resurrection is inconsistent with belief in God.
The phrase "why should it be thought a thing incredible" (ti apistion krinetai par' hymin — why is it judged unbelievable among you?) frames the disbelief as a JUDGMENT-ERROR: the audience is making a WRONG assessment. The resurrection isn't incredible. The assessment of incredibility is the mistake. The problem isn't the claim. It's the evaluation of the claim.
The "that God should raise the dead" (ei ho theos nekrous egeirei — if/that God raises dead ones) connects resurrection directly to GOD'S CHARACTER: the question isn't 'can dead bodies come back to life naturally?' The question is: can GOD raise the dead? And if you believe in God AT ALL, the answer must be: of course He can. The God who creates from nothing can certainly recreate from death.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Why is resurrection incredible to you — when you believe in a God who creates from nothing?
- 2.What does the incredulity being SELECTIVE teach about inconsistency in disbelief?
- 3.How does framing resurrection as THEOLOGICAL (God does it) rather than biological change the discussion?
- 4.What ONE THING do you find incredible — that's actually consistent with everything else you already believe?
Devotional
WHY is resurrection incredible to you? You believe in GOD — the God who created everything from nothing. Why would RAISING THE DEAD be beyond that God's capacity? The question challenges the logical consistency of everyone in the room: if God exists, resurrection is possible. Period.
The 'why should it be thought incredible' is a LOGIC challenge, not a faith challenge: Paul isn't asking for blind belief. He's asking for CONSISTENCY. You already believe in God. You already believe God created the world. You already believe God parts seas and sends fire from heaven. Why would RAISING THE DEAD be the ONE THING you can't accept? The incredulity is SELECTIVE. The disbelief is inconsistent.
The 'that God should raise the dead' makes the question THEISTIC, not scientific: Paul doesn't argue that dead bodies naturally come back to life. He argues that GOD raises dead bodies. The question isn't about biology. It's about THEOLOGY. If you believe in a God who is God — who has power, who created, who acts in history — then resurrection is within His EXPECTED capabilities, not outside them.
The question's power is in its SIMPLICITY: Paul doesn't present evidence for the resurrection (he does that elsewhere). He challenges the FRAMEWORK that says resurrection is impossible. The framework is: dead people stay dead. Paul's counter: they do — unless GOD raises them. And if you believe in God, you've already accepted a Being who can do exactly that.
Why is resurrection incredible to you — when the God you believe in is the God who raises the dead?
