Acts 4:27

Acts 4:27
For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,

My Notes

What Does Acts 4:27 Mean?

The early church prays and recognizes that the conspiracy against Jesus — Herod, Pontius Pilate, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel gathered together — was itself the fulfillment of God's predetermined plan.

The prayer acknowledges that the most hostile act in history — the crucifixion of God's anointed — was done within the boundaries of what God had determined beforehand. The conspirators acted freely and sinfully. And God's plan was accomplished through their actions.

"Against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed" — the victim is identified with tenderness: holy child, anointed by God. The conspiracy was against the purest, most set-apart person who ever lived.

"For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done" — the conspiracy accomplished God's predetermined purpose. The enemies thought they were destroying Jesus. They were fulfilling prophecy.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.How does God's plan being accomplished through the crucifixion — the worst act in history — shape your view of sovereignty?
  • 2.What conspiracy or opposition in your life might God be working through for purposes you cannot yet see?
  • 3.How do human free will and divine predetermination coexist in this verse?
  • 4.What does it mean that the enemies of Jesus unknowingly accomplished God's plan?

Devotional

Both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together. The conspiracy was comprehensive: political power (Herod and Pilate), Gentile force, Jewish participation. Every segment of human society contributed to the crucifixion.

For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. And all of it — every scheming politician, every angry mob member, every complicit bystander — was accomplishing what God had already determined. The conspiracy was real. The sin was real. And God's plan was running straight through the middle of it.

This is the most challenging truth about divine sovereignty: God's plan was accomplished through the worst act in human history. The crucifixion was the greatest crime ever committed and the greatest act of love ever performed — simultaneously.

If God can take the crucifixion of his Son and weave it into his redemptive plan, then no conspiracy against you is outside his sovereignty. The worst thing that has happened to you — the betrayal, the injustice, the opposition — is not outside God's counsel.

The enemies of Jesus thought they were winning. They were serving. And what they served, without knowing it, was the salvation of the world.
