Exodus 23:27

Exodus 23:27
I will send my fear before thee, and will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee.

My Notes

What Does Exodus 23:27 Mean?

God promises to send His fear before Israel — eth-eiemathi, my terror — as a spiritual weapon that precedes the army. Before a single sword is drawn, the enemy will be psychologically dismantled. "I will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come" — the Hebrew hammothi means I will confuse, I will throw into panic, I will discomfit. The destruction isn't through Israel's military prowess. It's through divine confusion planted in the enemy's psychology before Israel arrives.

"I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee" — v'nathatti eth-kol oy'vekha elekha oreph. The Hebrew oreph means the back of the neck — the position of flight. God will turn the enemies around so that Israel sees their backs, not their faces. The facing changes before the fighting starts. The battle is won in the enemy's mind before it's contested in the field.

The triple "I will" structure — I will send, I will destroy, I will make — places every dimension of the conquest in God's hands. The fear is His to send. The confusion is His to plant. The turning is His to produce. Israel's role is to walk into territory that God has already psychologically evacuated. The conquest is less a military campaign and more a procession into spaces God has cleared by rearranging the enemy's courage before Israel arrives.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What situation are you approaching with dread that God may have already destabilized before your arrival?
  • 2.If God sends His fear ahead of you, how does that change the way you prepare for intimidating confrontations?
  • 3.The three 'I wills' are all God's action. Where have you been trying to generate what only God can send?
  • 4.Have you ever walked into a situation expecting fierce opposition and found it surprisingly ready? Could that have been God arriving before you?

Devotional

God sends His fear ahead of you. Before you arrive. Before you say a word. Before you lift a hand. The terror goes first. The confusion is already planted in the enemy's camp before you walk into the situation. By the time you show up, the turning has already begun. Your enemies are showing you the backs of their necks because God rearranged their courage before you got there.

This changes the way you approach every intimidating situation. The job interview. The confrontation. The territory you've been called to occupy that looks occupied by forces stronger than you. God doesn't wait for you to generate enough courage to match the threat. He sends His own fear into the threat before you encounter it. The battle you're dreading may already be won in the invisible realm. The enemy you're preparing to face may already be confused, panicked, and turning to run. You just haven't arrived yet to see it.

The triple "I will" is the part worth memorizing. I will send my fear. I will confuse the opposition. I will turn your enemies around. Three divine initiatives. Zero human requirements except showing up. Your job isn't to generate terror in your enemies. It's to walk into the space God has prepared. The fear is His. The confusion is His. The turning is His. You're the one who arrives after the rearranging and finds the territory surprisingly ready for occupation. Because it is. God got there first.
