“But this man, because he continueth ever , hath an unchangeable priesthood.”
My Notes
What Does Hebrews 7:24 Mean?
"This man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood." Jesus' priesthood never changes hands because Jesus never dies. The old priests served until death, then were replaced. Jesus serves forever — so His priesthood is aparabaton (unchangeable, untransferable, permanent). Nobody replaces Him. Nobody succeeds Him. The priesthood stays with the one Priest who stays alive.
The word "unchangeable" (aparabatos) means non-transferable — the priesthood cannot pass to another. Every Levitical priest held a transferable position: when he died, the next priest took over. Jesus' position is non-transferable because the condition for transfer (death) never occurs. He continues forever. The position continues with Him.
The phrase "continueth ever" (menein eis ton aiona — remaining into the age) describes permanent existence. Jesus doesn't just live a long time. He continues into the age — without end, without interruption, without the succession that marked every previous priesthood.
Reflection Questions
- 1.How does the permanence of Jesus' priesthood anchor you when human spiritual leaders fail?
- 2.What does 'non-transferable' mean for your spiritual security?
- 3.How does a priesthood that never changes hands differ from every religious leader you've known?
- 4.What comfort do you take from 'he continueth ever'?
Devotional
He continues forever. So His priesthood never changes hands. Nobody takes over when He dies — because He doesn't die. Nobody succeeds Him — because the position never becomes vacant. The priesthood is permanent because the Priest is permanent.
Every other priest served temporarily. Aaron died. His sons died. Their sons died. Each death created a vacancy. Each vacancy required a succession. The priesthood was a relay race — each runner handing the baton to the next because each runner eventually fell. Jesus doesn't fall. He continues. The baton stays in His hands.
The 'unchangeable' — non-transferable — means you don't need a backup priest. You don't need someone to cover while Jesus is unavailable. You don't need to worry about whether the next priest will be as good as this one. There is no next priest. There is only this Priest. Forever.
For women who have experienced religious leaders who failed — priests who disappointed, pastors who left, mentors who fell — this verse is your anchor. Every human spiritual leader is temporary. Their position transfers. Their influence fades. Their tenure ends. Jesus' priesthood is the one that never changes hands. The one Priest who will never leave, never fail, never be replaced.
Your High Priest is permanent. Whatever else changes — and everything else will — He continues ever.
