Hebrews 9:11

Hebrews 9:11
But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;

My Notes

What Does Hebrews 9:11 Mean?

Christ arrives as High Priest — not of the current system but of "good things to come." He enters not the earthly tabernacle but a "greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands." The entire sacrificial system has been upgraded: the priest is greater, the tabernacle is greater, and the offering is greater (His own blood, verse 12).

The phrase "not made with hands" (ou cheiropoiētos) means not of human construction — not belonging to this created order. The tabernacle Christ ministers in isn't a building. It's the heavenly reality that the earthly tabernacle was always copying (verse 24: the earthly holy places are "figures of the true").

"Good things to come" identifies what Christ's priesthood provides: not the temporary relief of animal sacrifice, but the permanent, future-reaching blessings of the messianic age. Christ's high priestly work doesn't just handle past sins. It secures future blessings that haven't fully arrived yet.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.How does the upgrade (greater priest, greater tabernacle, greater sacrifice) change how you approach God?
  • 2.What does 'not made with hands' mean for your understanding of where Christ is ministering right now?
  • 3.How do you live in the 'already-but-not-yet' — covered by Christ's blood but still awaiting the fullness?
  • 4.Does the shadow-to-substance argument help you understand why the Old Testament system was necessary and why it's now complete?

Devotional

Christ is the High Priest. But the tabernacle He serves in wasn't built by hands. And what He offers isn't an animal. It's Himself.

The author of Hebrews systematically upgrades every component of the old system. The old priest? Mortal, sinful, temporary. The new Priest? Eternal, sinless, permanent. The old tabernacle? Handmade, earthly, a copy. The new tabernacle? Not made with hands, heavenly, the original. The old offering? Animal blood, repeated annually. The new offering? Christ's own blood, offered once.

"Not made with hands" — this is the dividing line between the old and the new. Everything in the old system was constructed by humans: the tabernacle, the altar, the furniture, the garments. Everything in the new system originates beyond human construction. The tabernacle is heavenly. The priest is divine. The offering is the God-man Himself.

"Good things to come" — Christ's priesthood isn't just about cleaning up the past. It's about securing the future. The blessings He's mediating haven't fully arrived yet. You're living in the already-but-not-yet: already covered by His blood, not yet experiencing the fullness of what His priesthood provides.

The earthly tabernacle was always a shadow (verse 24). The shadow was useful — it showed the shape of what was coming. But now the thing itself has arrived. Christ is the reality the shadow pointed to. The greater priest in the greater tabernacle offering the greater sacrifice.

You don't need the shadow anymore. The substance is here.
