“For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:”
My Notes
What Does Hebrews 9:24 Mean?
The writer of Hebrews explains where Christ's priestly ministry operates: for Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us.
Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands — the earthly tabernacle and temple — with their Holy Place and Most Holy Place — were made with hands (cheiropoietos). Human craftsmen built them according to divine blueprints. But they were copies, not the reality. Christ did not enter these human-constructed spaces to perform his priestly work.
Which are the figures of the true — figures (antitupa — antitypes, copies, representations). The earthly sanctuaries were figures — representations of a heavenly reality. They pointed to something. They were not the thing itself. The tabernacle was a shadow of the true sanctuary. The temple was a model of the real thing. The entire sacrificial system operated in the shadow realm — real but not ultimate.
But into heaven itself — Christ entered the original, not the copy. Heaven itself (autos ho ouranos) — the actual presence of God, the real sanctuary that the earthly one merely represented. The High Priest of the new covenant operates in heaven — not in a building in Jerusalem but in the throne room of God.
Now to appear in the presence of God — appear (emphanizo — to make visible, to present oneself) before God's face (prosopon). Christ stands in God's presence — visible, present, active. The appearing is current (now — nuni) — not a past event completed and done. Christ is presently appearing before God.
For us (huper hemon) — the two most important words. Christ's heavenly appearing is for us — on our behalf, for our benefit, representing our interests. The Son stands before the Father as the representative of every believer. His presence there is your presence there. His access is your access. His standing is your standing.
The verse establishes that Christ's priestly ministry is current, heavenly, and representative: he is in heaven now, appearing before God, for you.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does the earthly sanctuary being 'figures of the true' reveal about the relationship between Old Testament worship and Christ's heavenly ministry?
- 2.What does it mean that Christ entered 'heaven itself' rather than a human-made holy place — and why does the distinction matter?
- 3.How does 'now to appear' (present tense) change your understanding of what Christ is currently doing for you?
- 4.What does 'for us' — Christ's heavenly representation on your behalf — mean for your confidence in approaching God?
Devotional
Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands. The earthly temple — as magnificent as it was — was a copy. A model. A shadow of the real thing. And Christ did not enter the copy. He bypassed the human-constructed sanctuary entirely and entered the original: heaven itself.
Which are the figures of the true. Everything in the Old Testament sacrificial system — the tabernacle, the altar, the Most Holy Place, the annual atonement — was a figure. A pointer. A representation of something real in heaven. The priest entering the Most Holy Place on the Day of Atonement was acting out in shadow what Christ would do in substance. The shadow was necessary. But it was never the reality.
But into heaven itself. The reality. The actual throne room of God. The true sanctuary that the earthly one only imitated. Christ entered heaven — not a building, not a room, not a space constructed by human hands. Heaven itself. The presence of the living God.
Now to appear in the presence of God for us. Now. Present tense. Right now — at this moment — Christ is appearing before God's face. For us. On our behalf. Representing our interests. Standing where we cannot stand, before the one whose presence we cannot survive, advocating for us with the authority of a completed sacrifice.
For us. Those two words change everything. Christ is not in heaven for himself. He is there for you. His presence before the Father is your representation before the Father. His access is your access. His standing is your standing. When God looks at the Son standing before him, he sees the one who represents you — and the sacrifice that covers you.
Right now. In heaven. Before God's face. For you. That is where your High Priest is. That is what he is doing.
