- Verse 5
“Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms.”
My Notes
What Does Isaiah 47:5 Mean?
"Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms." Babylon — 'the lady of kingdoms' — is commanded to sit in silence and darkness. Her title is revoked. She will never again be called the queen of the world's empires. The nation that ruled over every kingdom is being deposed — not just militarily but linguistically. The NAME is removed. The title is cancelled.
The phrase "sit thou silent" (shevi dummam — sit in silence, sit mute) commands Babylon to STOP TALKING: the empire that issued commands to the world is told to be quiet. The voice that decreed policy for nations is silenced. The mouth that spoke over kingdoms is muted. The silence is the opposite of everything Babylon was — loud, commanding, authoritative.
The "no more be called the lady of kingdoms" (lo tosiphi yiqre'u lakh gevereth mamlakhot — they will not continue to call you mistress of kingdoms) is the revocation of identity: Babylon's TITLE is removed. The 'lady of kingdoms' — the queen-over-empires, the mistress of the world — loses her name. The identity that defined Babylon for generations is permanently cancelled. The calling stops.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What title or identity might God be revoking from your life?
- 2.What does being told to 'sit silent' teach about the end of self-proclaimed authority?
- 3.How does 'no more be called' — permanent identity revocation — differ from temporary setback?
- 4.What 'lady of kingdoms' identity are you holding onto that has already been cancelled?
Devotional
Sit silent. Enter darkness. You are no longer the lady of kingdoms. Babylon — the queen of empires, the mistress of the world, the voice that commanded nations — is told to be quiet and disappear into the dark. The title is revoked. The name is cancelled. The identity is erased.
The 'sit thou silent' is the most humiliating command for an empire: Babylon SPOKE — it issued edicts, decreed policies, commanded armies, dictated terms. The empire's power was expressed through its VOICE. And now: silence. Sit down. Be quiet. The voice that commanded the world has nothing left to say. The mouth that shaped history is muted.
The 'get thee into darkness' adds invisibility to the silence: Babylon ruled in daylight — visible, dominant, the center of the world's attention. Now: darkness. The empire that everyone watched is told to disappear into the dark. The stage that Babylon occupied goes black. The spotlight shuts off. The performance is over.
The 'no more be called the lady of kingdoms' is the identity execution: Babylon's self-understanding was 'lady of kingdoms' — she ruled OVER other empires. She was the queen of queens. And God says: that name is cancelled. Nobody will call you that again. The title that defined you is permanently revoked. You're not the lady of kingdoms. You're the silenced, darkened former queen.
What title or identity do you cling to that God might be revoking — and can you sit in the silence?
