“Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the LORD.”
My Notes
What Does Jeremiah 2:3 Mean?
God remembers Israel's early devotion: "Israel was holiness unto the LORD, and the firstfruits of his increase." In the beginning — during the wilderness period — Israel was set apart, consecrated, the first portion of God's harvest. They were holy, and anyone who touched them paid for it: "all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them."
The firstfruits metaphor is agricultural and legal. The firstfruits — the first portion of the harvest — belonged exclusively to God. They were sacred, untouchable, set apart. Israel was God's firstfruits among the nations: His first, His best, His dedicated portion. Devouring the firstfruits was a capital offense.
The memory of what Israel was — holy, set apart, protected — makes the current reality more painful. Chapters 2-3 describe Israel's decline from firstfruits status to spiritual adultery. The contrast between what they were and what they've become is the emotional engine of Jeremiah's early prophecies.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Can you remember a season of early, genuine devotion to God? What was it like?
- 2.What does it mean that God opens His case against Israel with memory rather than accusation?
- 3.How does knowing you were God's 'firstfruits' change your understanding of your value?
- 4.What drift from early devotion do you need to address?
Devotional
You were holy. You were My firstfruits. Anyone who touched you paid for it. God remembers the early days — when Israel was set apart, when the relationship was young, when the devotion was genuine.
This is how God opens His case against Israel: with memory. Not with accusation first but with remembrance. Remember what you were? Remember how it started? You were holiness. My firstfruits. The sacred portion I set apart for Myself. And anyone who came against you learned what it cost to touch My consecrated people.
The firstfruits imagery is deeply personal. The first portion of the harvest was given to God not because it was the leftover but because it was the best. It represented the whole crop's value. Israel was God's first portion — the nation through which He would bless all nations. They were chosen not because they were many but because they were first.
God's grief in Jeremiah starts here — with the memory of what the relationship was before it was damaged. He doesn't begin with anger. He begins with: remember what we had? Remember when you were holy? Remember when I protected you from everyone who tried to devour you?
Have you drifted from your early devotion? God remembers what you were before the drift. He remembers the firstfruits season of your faith. And His grief isn't that you were never holy — it's that you were, and you forgot.
