John 10:28

John 10:28
And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

My Notes

What Does John 10:28 Mean?

Jesus continues the Good Shepherd discourse with one of the strongest security promises in Scripture: I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

Three assurances stacked together: eternal life is given (not earned), they shall never perish (the negative is emphatic — absolutely not, ever), and no one can pluck them from his hand (the grip belongs to Jesus, not to you).

"I give" — the eternal life is a gift. Not a reward. Not a wage. Given. The initiative is Christ's.

"Neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand" — the security is external. It does not depend on your grip. It depends on his. And nothing — no person, no force, no power — can overpower the hand that holds you.

The next verse (v.29) doubles down: the Father, who gave them to Jesus, is greater than all. And no one can pluck them from the Father's hand. You are held by two hands — the Son's and the Father's.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.How does the security being in Christ's hand rather than yours change your confidence?
  • 2.What does 'shall never perish' — emphatic, absolute — mean for your fear of falling away?
  • 3.What forces have tried to 'pluck' you from Christ's hand — and why have they failed?
  • 4.How does being held by both the Son and the Father (v.29) double your security?

Devotional

I give unto them eternal life. Give. Not sell. Not lend conditionally. Give. The eternal life you have was placed in your hands as a present.

They shall never perish. Never. The Greek is emphatic — a double negative that means absolutely not, under any circumstances, ever. If you belong to Jesus, perishing is not in your future. It has been permanently excluded.

Neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. The security is not in your ability to hold on. It is in his refusal to let go. His hand is stronger than any force that could try to remove you. No person, no demon, no circumstance, no failure can pry you out of the grip of Christ.

Your grip fails. His does not. Your faithfulness wavers. His does not. Your confidence fluctuates. His hand stays closed.

If you have been terrified of losing your salvation — afraid that your failures will eventually exceed God's patience — this verse says: you are in his hand. And nothing can get you out.

The security is not in your performance. It is in his grip. And his grip is eternal.
