John 21:1

John 21:1
After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself.

My Notes

What Does John 21:1 Mean?

"After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself." John 21 opens with a THIRD post-resurrection appearance (verse 14) — this time at the Sea of Galilee (Tiberias). The phrase 'shewed himself' (ephanerōsen heauton — He manifested/revealed Himself) is used TWICE in one verse, emphasizing that the showing is DELIBERATE. Jesus CHOSE to appear. The manifestation is INTENTIONAL, not accidental. The risen Christ controls when, where, and to whom He becomes visible.

The phrase "shewed himself again" (ephanerōsen heauton palin — He manifested Himself again) makes the appearing REPEATED: the risen Jesus doesn't appear once and disappear. He appears AGAIN — multiple times, in different locations, to different groups. The 'again' establishes a PATTERN: the resurrection isn't a single event that happened once. It's an ONGOING manifestation that keeps happening. The risen Christ keeps showing up.

The "at the sea of Tiberias" (epi tēs thalassēs tēs Tiberiados — at/upon the sea of Tiberias) returns the story to GALILEE — where the disciples' story BEGAN. The ministry that started at the Sea of Galilee concludes at the Sea of Galilee. The disciples who were called FROM fishing (Matthew 4:18-22) are found fishing AGAIN. The geography circles back. The vocation reverts. The disciples have returned to what they were before Jesus called them.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.Have you reverted to your pre-calling life — and might Jesus be showing up to call you again?
  • 2.What does Jesus appearing at the place where it all BEGAN teach about grace meeting regression?
  • 3.How does 'shewed himself' being DELIBERATE change what you expect from the risen Christ?
  • 4.What sea of Tiberias — what original calling-place — are you back at?

Devotional

Jesus showed Himself AGAIN. At the sea of Tiberias. The same lake where it all began. The disciples have gone back to FISHING — back to the life they left when Jesus called them. And the risen Christ shows up at the water's edge. The geography circles back. The calling will be renewed.

The 'shewed himself' — used TWICE — emphasizes INTENTIONAL revelation: the risen Jesus doesn't just happen to be visible. He MANIFESTS — deliberately, purposefully, choosing the moment and the audience. The appearing is controlled by the One appearing. The risen Christ decides when to become visible. The disciples don't discover Jesus. Jesus REVEALS Himself.

The 'again' establishes the PATTERN of post-resurrection appearances: the risen Christ doesn't appear once for proof and then vanish permanently. He appears AGAIN and AGAIN — in the upper room, then to Thomas, now at the sea. Each appearance serves a PURPOSE. The repetition says: the resurrection isn't a single event. It's an ONGOING reality. The risen Christ KEEPS showing up.

The 'sea of Tiberias' returns the story to its BEGINNING: the Sea of Galilee is where Jesus FIRST called the disciples (Mark 1:16-20). They LEFT their nets to follow. Now they've RETURNED to the nets. The circling-back is both GEOGRAPHIC and VOCATIONAL — they're where they started, doing what they used to do. The disciples have REVERTED. And the risen Christ meets them at the reversion.

Have you reverted to your pre-calling life — and might the risen Christ be showing up at the water's edge to call you again?
