My Notes
What Does John 3:35 Mean?
John summarizes the Father-Son relationship in a single verse: the Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.
The Father loveth the Son — the first clause establishes the foundation: love. The Father (ho pater) loves (agapao) the Son (ton huion). The love is present tense — continuous, ongoing, eternal. The Father's love for the Son is not a response to the incarnation or the obedience of the cross. It is the eternal reality of the Trinity: the Father has always loved the Son. The love is the origin of everything that follows.
And hath given all things into his hand — the second clause describes the consequence of the love: total authority. Given (didomi — perfect tense: has given, with permanent results). All things (panta — everything, without exception). Into his hand (eis ten cheira — into the authority, the power, the control of). The Father's love produces the Father's giving — and the giving is comprehensive: all things.
The all things includes: authority over life and death (5:21-22), authority to judge (5:27), authority over all flesh (17:2), and the completion of the Father's work (4:34). There is nothing outside the scope of what the Father has placed in the Son's hand. Every domain, every power, every outcome — all things.
The verse connects love and authority: because the Father loves the Son, the Father entrusts all things to him. The authority is not seized. It is given — a gift of love from Father to Son. The handing over is the expression of the relationship. The one most loved is the one most trusted. The one most trusted receives all things.
John 13:3 echoes this: Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands. The knowledge of total authority is what enables the total humility of the foot-washing that follows. The one who holds all things stoops to wash feet — because the authority is secure enough to express itself in service.
The verse also establishes the Son as the mediator of everything: all things from the Father reach humanity through the Son's hand. Access to what the Father gives requires relationship with the Son who holds it.
Reflection Questions
- 1.How does the Father's love for the Son function as the foundation for the giving of 'all things'?
- 2.What does 'all things into his hand' include — and what does the comprehensiveness communicate about the Son's authority?
- 3.How does Jesus washing feet (John 13:3-5) with the knowledge that all things were in his hands redefine the relationship between authority and service?
- 4.What does it mean for your life that 'all things' — including your circumstances — are in the hand of the beloved Son?
Devotional
The Father loveth the Son. Before anything else — before the giving, before the authority, before the all things — love. The Father loves the Son. The relationship at the center of the universe is not power. It is love. The Trinity operates on love. Everything flows from this: the Father's eternal, continuous, unending love for the Son.
And hath given all things into his hand. Because the Father loves the Son, the Father gives. And the giving is total: all things. Everything. No exception. No reservation. No category withheld. The Father places the entirety of creation, authority, judgment, life, and death into the Son's hand. The most trusted hand in the universe receives everything.
All things. The words should stop you. Not some things. Not most things. All things — into his hand. The outcome of history. The destiny of nations. The salvation of individuals. The judgment of the wicked. The resurrection of the dead. All of it — in the hand of the Son. Because the Father loves him. And the Father trusts him with everything because the Father loves him with everything.
The one who holds all things washed feet (John 13:3-5). The one with total authority took a towel and knelt. The security of holding all things produced the humility of serving all people. The authority did not make him proud. It made him free — free to stoop, free to serve, free to give himself away. The hands that hold all things are the hands that washed the disciples' dirty feet.
All things are in his hand. Your life is in his hand. Your future is in his hand. Your struggles, your fears, your unanswered questions — all in the hand that the Father filled because the Father loves. The hand that holds all things is the hand that washed feet. And that hand is holding you.
