“Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.”
My Notes
What Does John 6:32 Mean?
"Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven." Jesus CORRECTS their theology about the manna: Moses didn't give the bread. My FATHER did. And the bread from heaven Moses' generation ate wasn't the TRUE bread. The TRUE bread from heaven is being given NOW — by the Father. The manna was a SHADOW. The true bread is HERE. Moses was the intermediary, not the source. The Father was always the giver.
The phrase "Moses gave you not that bread" (ou Mōusēs edōken hymin ton arton ek tou ouranou — not Moses gave you the bread from heaven) CORRECTS a misattribution: the crowd credited MOSES with the manna (verse 31 — 'our fathers did eat manna in the desert, as it is written'). Jesus says: MOSES didn't give it. The manna was from the FATHER — God was the source, Moses was the conduit. The correction separates the intermediary from the origin.
The "my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven" (ho patēr mou didōsin hymin ton arton ek tou ouranou ton alēthinon — My Father gives you the bread from heaven the true/genuine) introduces the TRUE bread: the manna was bread from heaven — but not the TRUE bread. The TRUE bread is being given NOW (didōsin — present tense: GIVES, is giving). The Father who gave manna THEN is giving the true bread NOW. The past provision was preview. The present provision is the reality.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What good provision are you clinging to when the TRUE bread is being offered right now?
- 2.What does the manna being REAL but not TRUE teach about good gifts pointing to better ones?
- 3.How does the Father giving the true bread NOW (present tense) change what you're looking for?
- 4.What misattribution (crediting Moses instead of the Father) might be misdirecting your faith?
Devotional
Moses didn't give the bread. My FATHER did. And the bread Moses' generation ate wasn't the TRUE bread. The true bread from heaven is being given RIGHT NOW — by the Father. The manna was a preview. The real thing is here. The shadow was in the wilderness. The substance is standing in front of you.
The 'Moses gave you not' CORRECTS the source-attribution: the crowd credited the manna to Moses. Jesus says: wrong source. Moses was the INTERMEDIARY. The FATHER was the GIVER. The correction matters because the crowd will need to redirect their faith from Moses to the Father — and from the manna to the true bread. The misattribution of the source leads to the misidentification of the gift.
The 'my Father GIVETH' — present tense — makes the true bread CURRENT: the manna was given THEN (past tense). The true bread is being given NOW (present tense). The Father who gave manna in the wilderness is giving something BETTER right now. The giving hasn't stopped. The giving has UPGRADED. The bread that fed for one day is replaced by the bread that feeds for eternity.
The 'true bread from heaven' makes the manna a SHADOW of the real: the manna was bread from heaven — genuine, miraculous, life-sustaining. But it wasn't the TRUE bread. It was the preview. The type. The pointer. The TRUE bread — the one the manna was ABOUT — is being given now. The crowd has been eating the ILLUSTRATION. The REALITY is standing before them. Verse 35 will identify the true bread: 'I am the bread of life.'
What 'manna' — what good provision — are you clinging to, when the TRUE bread is being offered right now?
