“If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.”
My Notes
What Does John 7:17 Mean?
Jesus offers a radical epistemological principle: if any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. The knowledge comes through obedience, not the reverse.
If any man will do his will — the condition is volitional. Will (thelo) means to be willing, to desire, to determine. The starting point is not intellectual curiosity but moral willingness — a readiness to obey God's will before you fully understand the doctrine.
He shall know of the doctrine — the knowing (ginosko) follows the willing. Understanding of whether Jesus's teaching is from God comes as a result of being willing to do God's will. The intellectual clarity is a consequence of the moral commitment.
Whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself — the specific knowledge gained is discernment: is this teaching divine or merely human? The willingness to obey creates the capacity to discern. The person who is morally ready to do whatever God says gains the ability to recognize when God is speaking.
The principle reverses the common approach: most people want to understand before they commit. Jesus says commit before you fully understand — and the understanding will follow. The obstacle to recognizing divine truth is not intellectual limitation. It is moral unwillingness. The person who says 'I will do whatever God reveals' is the person who can discern what God has revealed.
This is not anti-intellectual. It is supra-intellectual — it places the heart's posture ahead of the mind's analysis as the gateway to spiritual knowledge.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Why does Jesus place willingness to obey before intellectual understanding as the path to spiritual knowledge?
- 2.How does moral willingness create the capacity to discern divine truth?
- 3.Where might spiritual confusion in your life be caused not by lack of information but by lack of willingness?
- 4.What would it look like to tell God 'I will do your will' before you fully understand what that means?
Devotional
If any man will do his will, he shall know. The order matters. Not: understand first, then obey. Obey first — be willing first — and the understanding comes. Jesus is saying that spiritual knowledge is unlocked not by study alone but by willingness. The person who is ready to do whatever God says is the person who can recognize when God is speaking.
He shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God. The confusion about what is true — which teaching is from God and which is merely human opinion — is not primarily an intellectual problem. It is a moral one. The person who has already decided to do God's will has the capacity to discern God's voice. The person who has not decided is stuck in permanent theological uncertainty.
Or whether I speak of myself. Jesus puts his own teaching on the line. Test it. But test it with a willing heart, not a resistant mind. Come ready to obey, and the doctrine will become clear. Come looking for reasons to reject, and everything will remain ambiguous.
This explains why some people hear the gospel and immediately recognize it as true — and others hear the same message and find it foolish. The difference is not IQ. It is willingness. The heart that says 'I will do your will' is the heart that can hear God's voice.
Are you stuck in spiritual confusion? Jesus offers a path forward. It is not more research. It is more willingness. Tell God: I will do whatever you reveal. And watch the doctrine become clear.
