Luke 8:3

Luke 8:3
And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.

My Notes

What Does Luke 8:3 Mean?

"And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance." Luke names the WOMEN who FUNDED Jesus' ministry: Joanna (wife of Herod's household manager — a woman with political connections and personal wealth), Susanna (otherwise unknown), and MANY OTHERS. These women MINISTERED to Jesus FROM THEIR SUBSTANCE — their personal resources, their private wealth, their own money. The ministry of Jesus was financially supported by women.

The phrase "Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward" (Iōanna gynē Chouza epitropou Hērōdou — Joanna, wife of Chuza, the manager/steward of Herod) identifies a woman of SIGNIFICANT social position: Chuza managed Herod's household — one of the most powerful administrative positions in Galilee. Joanna had access to wealth, connections, and political proximity. She used all of it for Jesus' ministry. The king's household manager's wife funded the wandering rabbi.

The "ministered unto him of their substance" (diēkonoun autois ek tōn hyparchontōn autais — they were serving/ministering to them from their possessions/property) means the women PROVIDED from their OWN RESOURCES: the ministry wasn't funded by the Temple, by donations from crowds, or by rich male patrons. It was funded by WOMEN — from their personal possessions, their private wealth, their own substance. The women didn't just follow. They FUNDED.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What material resource are you using to support Jesus' work — not just prayer but substance?
  • 2.What does women funding Jesus' ministry teach about female contribution being foundational, not supplementary?
  • 3.How does Joanna's palace-connections serving Jesus' street-ministry describe unexpected resource-channels?
  • 4.What 'many others' — what network of supporters — sustains the work you're part of?

Devotional

Joanna — wife of Herod's household manager. Susanna. And MANY OTHERS. Women who ministered to Jesus from their OWN SUBSTANCE. Their money. Their resources. Their personal wealth. The ministry of Jesus was funded by women. The most important work in history was bankrolled by female generosity.

The 'Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward' brings the HIGHEST social circles into Jesus' support base: Joanna had access to Herod's court. Her husband managed the royal household. She had wealth, connections, and political proximity. And she used it ALL for Jesus. The woman from the palace funded the man from the street. The establishment's resources served the counter-establishment's mission.

The 'many others' expands the support beyond the named women: Joanna and Susanna are NAMED. But 'many others' (pollai heterai — many other women) means the female support base was LARGE. Not two or three wealthy women. MANY. The financial infrastructure of Jesus' ministry was provided by a NETWORK of women who pooled their resources for the mission.

The 'ministered unto him of their substance' makes the women's contribution MATERIAL, not just spiritual: they didn't just pray for Jesus. They didn't just accompany Him. They FUNDED Him — from their possessions, from their property, from their personal wealth. The 'substance' (hyparchonta — possessions, property, what belongs to you) means they gave from what they OWNED. The ministry of Jesus was tangibly, materially sustained by women's money.

What 'substance' — what material resource — are you using to minister to Jesus' work?
