“He shall cut off the spirit of princes: he is terrible to the kings of the earth.”
My Notes
What Does Psalms 76:12 Mean?
The psalm closes with two declarations about God's relationship with human power: he "cuts off the spirit of princes" and is "terrible to the kings of the earth." The most powerful humans on the planet — princes and kings — are subject to God's authority over their very spirits.
"Cut off the spirit" (batsar ruach) means to diminish, to restrain, to clip. God doesn't just defeat powerful people externally; he addresses their internal power — their spirit, their confidence, their sense of invincibility. He clips the wings of the mighty from the inside.
The word "terrible" (nora) is the same used in Psalm 68:35 — awe-inspiring, reverence-inducing. Kings should fear God because his power categorically exceeds theirs. The psalm's message to earthly rulers is simple: your authority has a ceiling, and God is above it.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Have you seen a powerful person's 'spirit' diminished in a way that could only be explained by God?
- 2.How does knowing God is 'terrible to the kings of the earth' change your relationship with earthly authority?
- 3.Where do you need the assurance that the powerful person in your life is still under God's authority?
- 4.What does it mean that God addresses the inner life of rulers, not just their external power?
Devotional
God clips the spirit of princes. The inner fire that makes powerful people feel invincible — God can extinguish it. Not their armies, not their treasuries, not their territories. Their spirit. The thing inside them that says, "I am untouchable."
This is one of Scripture's most quietly terrifying descriptions of divine authority. God doesn't need to send armies against the powerful. He simply diminishes what's inside them. The confidence drains. The certainty fades. The sense of invincibility that made them dangerous dissolves. And they can't explain why.
He is "terrible to the kings of the earth." The most powerful people on the planet, with all their resources and influence and military might, find God terrifying. Not because he's cruel but because they recognize someone whose power makes theirs irrelevant. The king who can command thousands still answers to the King who commands creation.
This should comfort anyone living under the shadow of powerful people. The boss who seems untouchable, the system that seems immovable, the leader who seems unaccountable — God clips their spirit. Not on your timeline, maybe. Not in the way you'd choose. But the most powerful people on earth are subject to a power they can't resist and can barely comprehend.
