Revelation 6:15

Revelation 6:15
And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;

My Notes

What Does Revelation 6:15 Mean?

John describes the universal response to the sixth seal: the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains.

The list is comprehensive and deliberate. It covers every social stratum: kings (political power), great men (social prominence), rich men (economic power), chief captains (military authority), mighty men (physical strength), bondmen (enslaved), free men (common citizens). Every category of human society — from the most powerful to the least — responds identically: they hide.

Hid themselves — the response is instinctive. There is no debate, no defiance, no negotiation. Every class of humanity seeks concealment. The hiding is desperate — in dens (caves) and rocks of mountains — the most primitive shelter available. The sophistication of civilization collapses into cave-dwelling.

Verse 16 reveals what they say: fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb. They prefer death by rockfall to facing the Lamb's wrath. The paradox is devastating: a Lamb — the gentlest creature — inspires more terror than anything earth has ever produced.

The verse fulfills Isaiah 2:19: they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty. What Isaiah prophesied, John sees fulfilled. The day arrives when every human pretension is stripped bare, and the only instinct left is to hide.

Reflection Questions

  • 1.What does it reveal that every social class — from kings to slaves — responds identically to God's judgment?
  • 2.How does the image of humanity hiding in caves strip away the illusion of human power?
  • 3.What is the paradox of 'the wrath of the Lamb' — and why is it more terrifying than any human threat?
  • 4.How does your response to the Lamb now determine your experience of the Lamb then?

Devotional

The kings of the earth. The great men. The rich men. The chief captains. The mighty men. Every bondman. Every free man. Read the list. Every category of power, wealth, strength, and status — and every person without any of those things. All of them. Hiding.

Hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains. The kings are in caves. The generals are behind rocks. The billionaires are crouching in holes in the ground. Every structure of human power, every system of wealth and influence, every military force — all of it is irrelevant. The only instinct left is to hide.

This is the day when everything that seemed powerful is revealed as powerless. The throne rooms are empty. The boardrooms are abandoned. The fortresses are useless. Every person who built their identity on being a king, a captain, a rich man, a mighty man — they are all in the same caves, hiding from the same face.

And they are not hiding from an invading army or a natural disaster. They are hiding from a Lamb. The wrath of the Lamb — the gentlest creature in creation — is what drives all of humanity underground. The same Lamb who was slain (5:6) now terrifies every person alive. The one they ignored, rejected, or never took seriously — his face is the thing they cannot bear to see.

What you do with the Lamb now determines whether you hide from him then. Today he is the Lamb who was slain for you. On that day he is the Lamb whose wrath empties every throne on earth.
