“O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?”
My Notes
What Does Psalms 89:8 Mean?
Ethan the Ezrahite asks a rhetorical question expecting the answer "no one": who is a mighty LORD like you? The question addresses God's strength (chazaq — firm, resolute, powerful) and then pivots to what makes him truly unique: his faithfulness (emunah) that surrounds him on every side.
The pairing of strength and faithfulness is deliberate. Many beings are powerful — kings, armies, natural forces. But power paired with perfect faithfulness is unique to God. Human power is unreliable; divine power is surrounded by faithfulness like a garment. You can't encounter God's strength without encountering his faithfulness because it's on every side of him.
The "round about thee" creates a visual: faithfulness isn't just one of God's attributes — it encircles him. Wherever you approach God from, faithfulness is what you meet first. It's the perimeter of his being, the atmosphere of his presence.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What's the difference between power alone and power surrounded by faithfulness?
- 2.How does knowing God's faithfulness is 'round about him' change your approach to his power?
- 3.When have you experienced God's strength and faithfulness working together?
- 4.Where do you need the assurance that God's power is governed by his promises right now?
Devotional
Who is like you, LORD? Not in power — lots of things are powerful. In faithfulness. The question Ethan asks isolates what makes God absolutely unique: his power is surrounded by faithfulness on every side.
Power without faithfulness is terrifying. A powerful person who can't be trusted is the definition of a tyrant. But God's power is encircled by faithfulness — you can't approach his strength without first passing through his reliability. His might never operates independently of his word. What he said, he does. What he promised, he keeps. Always.
The image of faithfulness being "round about" God means there's no angle of approach where faithfulness isn't present. You can't sneak up on God from a side where he's unreliable. You can't find the gap in his faithfulness because there is no gap. It surrounds him completely.
This matters when you're afraid of God's power. If he were only strong, you'd have reason to fear. But his strength is dressed in faithfulness. The God who can do anything will only do what's consistent with his promises. That's not a limitation — it's a guarantee. His power serves his faithfulness, not the other way around.
