My Notes
What Does Revelation 20:12 Mean?
John sees the final judgment: the dead, small and great, standing before God. The books are opened — records of deeds. And another book is opened — the book of life. The dead are judged out of those things written in the books, according to their works.
The judgment is comprehensive: small and great. No one is too insignificant to stand before God. No one is too important to be exempt. Every human being faces the same evaluation.
Two sets of books: the books of works (recording what you did) and the book of life (recording who belongs to God). Both are consulted. The works reveal the life. The book of life reveals the relationship.
"According to their works" describes the basis of judgment. Works are not the cause of salvation — the book of life is. But works are the evidence of the life lived. What you did reveals who you belonged to.
Reflection Questions
- 1.What does 'small and great' standing before God mean for the equality of judgment?
- 2.How do the books of works and the book of life function differently in the judgment?
- 3.What does being judged 'according to works' mean if salvation is by grace?
- 4.Is your name in the book of life — and how does that certainty (or uncertainty) affect how you live?
Devotional
The dead, small and great, stand before God. Everyone. The powerful and the invisible. The famous and the forgotten. Small and great — all standing. All equal before the throne.
The books were opened. Records. Every deed recorded. Every act documented. Nothing forgotten, nothing overlooked. The books are thorough and the judge is omniscient.
Another book was opened, which is the book of life. Two kinds of books. The books of works record what you did. The book of life records who you are. Both are consulted. But the book of life is the one that matters most.
The dead were judged according to their works. Your works do not save you — the book of life does. But your works reveal you. What you did is the evidence of whose you were. The works are the testimony. The book of life is the verdict.
Small and great. That is the detail that should produce sobriety. No one is exempt. The CEO and the janitor. The president and the prisoner. The famous pastor and the unknown saint. All standing. All judged. All facing the books.
What will your books say? And more importantly — is your name in the other one?
