My Notes
What Does Revelation 21:3 Mean?
John hears a great voice declaring the culmination of the biblical story: the tabernacle of God is with men. He will dwell with them. They shall be his people. God himself shall be with them and be their God.
This is the fulfillment of every covenant promise in the Bible — from Abraham to Moses to David to the new covenant. The recurring formula — I will be their God, they shall be my people — finds its ultimate expression here.
"The tabernacle of God is with men" uses the language of the wilderness tabernacle — God's portable dwelling. But now the dwelling is permanent and the location is among men. God is not behind a veil. He is with his people. No barrier. No mediator. Direct presence.
"God himself shall be with them, and be their God" — the emphasis is on God himself. Not a representative. Not an angel. God himself. Present. Personal. Permanent.
Reflection Questions
- 1.How does this verse fulfill every covenant promise that came before it?
- 2.What does 'God himself' — not a representative — being with you mean for the quality of that presence?
- 3.How is the new creation 'God coming to live with us' rather than 'us going to live with God'?
- 4.What ache for God's presence does this verse finally resolve for you?
Devotional
Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them. The story that began with God walking in the garden with Adam and Eve reaches its conclusion: God dwelling permanently with his people. No more separation. No more veil. No more distance.
They shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. The oldest promise in the Bible — I will be your God, you will be my people — spoken to Abraham, restated through Moses, renewed through Jeremiah, and fulfilled in Revelation. The promise that ran through every covenant arrives at its destination.
God himself. Not a symbol. Not a representation. God himself — present, tangible, near. The tabernacle is not a building. It is God's own presence, pitched permanently among the humans he created and redeemed.
This is what the entire Bible has been building toward: not heaven in the clouds but God with his people. The new creation is not escape from earth. It is God coming to live where you live. Emmanuel — God with us — in its final, permanent form.
Every ache for God's presence, every prayer for him to be near, every longing for the veil to be removed — it all resolves here. The tabernacle of God is with men. He is with them. He is their God. And the dwelling never ends.
