“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,”
My Notes
What Does Romans 8:38 Mean?
"For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come." Paul begins the most comprehensive security statement in Scripture: a list of everything that could theoretically separate believers from God's love — and declaring that none of them can. The list spans existence (death, life), the spiritual realm (angels, principalities, powers), time (things present, things to come), space (v. 39: height, depth), and creation itself (nor any other creature). Every conceivable threat category is named and declared impotent.
The word "persuaded" (pepeismai — perfect passive: I have been convinced and remain convinced) describes a settled conviction: Paul was persuaded in the past and the persuasion holds. This isn't a hope. It's a conclusion from which he cannot be moved.
Reflection Questions
- 1.Which item on Paul's list (death, life, angels, powers, present, future) most threatens your sense of God's love — and does this verse change that?
- 2.What does 'persuaded' (settled conviction, not hopeful wish) teach about the quality of assurance available to you?
- 3.How does the comprehensiveness of the list (every category covered) produce security rather than just theological information?
- 4.Where do you need to hear 'nothing can separate you' spoken over the specific threat you're facing?
Devotional
I am persuaded. Not: I hope. Not: I think. Persuaded. Convinced. Settled. The verb is perfect tense: I was persuaded in the past and I remain persuaded now. The conviction was formed and it holds. Nothing has shaken it. Nothing can.
Neither death. The biggest threat. The universal enemy. The one thing every human fears. Death can't separate you from God's love. You will die — and God's love will be on the other side. The grave isn't a wall between you and God. It's a door.
Nor life. Living can't separate you either. The pressures, temptations, distractions, and demands of being alive — none of them can create distance between you and God's love. Death can't do it from one side. Life can't do it from the other.
Nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers. The spiritual realm — good angels, bad angels, cosmic authorities, demonic powers — can't separate you. Whatever hierarchy exists in the unseen world, none of its members have the authority or the power to disconnect you from God's love. The demons that accuse you can't detach you. The spiritual forces that oppose you can't unplug you.
Nor things present, nor things to come. Time can't do it. Your current crisis can't separate you. Your future failures can't either. The thing you're going through right now — can't separate. The thing you're afraid of tomorrow — can't separate. God's love covers every tense: past, present, future.
The list is deliberately comprehensive because the security is deliberately total. Paul names everything anyone could imagine as a threat and declares each one impotent. Death — no. Life — no. Angels — no. Powers — no. Time — no. Height, depth, any creature (v. 39) — no. No. No. No.
Nothing can separate you from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (v. 39). The most famous sentence in Romans is the conclusion of the most comprehensive threat-assessment in the Bible. And the conclusion is: nothing. The love holds. Through everything. Against everything. Despite everything. Nothing.
