“Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me: And blessed be thy advice.”
— 1 Samuel 25:32-33
A woman of intelligence and beauty who used wisdom and quick action to prevent bloodshed, earning David's admiration and becoming his wife.
Her Story
Abigail was married to Nabal, a wealthy but foolish man. When David and his men sought provisions after protecting Nabal's shepherds, Nabal insulted them. David set out with four hundred armed men to destroy Nabal's household. Abigail learned of the danger and quickly gathered generous provisions. She rode out to meet David, bowed before him, and spoke with remarkable wisdom, urging him not to shed blood in anger. Her words turned David from his wrath. He blessed her and said, 'Blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou.' When Nabal died shortly after, David sent for Abigail and she became his wife. She is described as both intelligent and beautiful — a woman whose wisdom literally saved lives.
